Don't know if this has been discussed yet! How is the emergency drive system structured? How does the engine react when essential control elements such as the exhaust gas cleaning system fail? Can the car continue to run (as long as there is oil and water) if the electrical system has failed or there is no more AdBlue in the tank?
The oil conversation has a new more relevant home. Welcome to the oil thread. This is specifically for the B57 engines that run on Diesel

B58 gets a nod, and BMW a solid re reliability…. https://www.hotcars.com/car-brands-that-make-the-most-durable-engines/?utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_campaign=Echobox_HC1&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR1bdzRR7-3dZi9itwsCA1Ydr93rQPSAkAw0f36Ef5WZ5_RkIIDbck2C-Uo#bmw
Is anyone considering aftermarket tuning options to pull more power and torque from the B58 power plant?
Thread 'B57 diesel engine variant'
I thought I'd seen someone posing the question that without the engine variant, then we wouldn't know many details of the engine. Does knowing this detail off the CoC help? Engine code: B57D30. https://www.automaniac.org/engine/bmw/1701/bmw-2993cc-diesel-3.0-b57d30-24v-320hp
Thread 'B58 or B58TU?'
Will we get the B58 or the B58TU engine? You can easily distinguish between these two by taking a look at the exhaust manifold. The B58 comes with classical exhaust manifold with 6 outlets, one per cylinder. The B58TU has it’s exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head. Only two outlets which are the actual manifold go to the turbocharger. The B58 came 2016. It has two timing chains, one for each camshaft. The B58TU engine came 2019. Unlike the non-TU, it has only one timing chain...
New to forum. First post. I might be jumping the gun a bit on this one. A man can dream, right? I currently have a US spec 335d with a tuned M57D30TU2TOP with the ZF6HP28. Car itself is getting a bit long in the tooth, but the engine runs like a TOP. (pun intended) I wonder what problems with fitment one would encounter. Not planning on a swap until the warranty expires, but; I would love to have the 350ish HP and 600ish lb-ft in my future IG.
Thread 'B57: What To Fill In Where?'
I have not found any pictures or graphics in the manual which explains which liquids have to be filled in where. I found A) ... ? B) ... ? C) ... ? D) motor oil E) wiping water F) ... ? Questions: Can you fill in the blanks? If known: spec of the liquidf? If known: amount? Did I miss something?
Thank to whoever gave me the tip, that the B57 and B58 manuals are available here. I downloaded them and started to read....now I have a question and maybe an expert is here to answer it. While I found the B57 manual somehat better documented than the B58, the same question stayed unaswered. I wanted to know how the piston rod bearings are lubricated on the piston side. I found thet the crankshaft side is lubricated by bores in the crankshaft, quite normal. In the B58 I found nothing for...
Thought I would share a conversation I had with my Brother in Law who is a diesel fitter and a lifetime of experience fitting, repairing and selling diesel engines. BIL: Reckon I drove an X5 with the B57 engine from Melbourne/ Sydney return towing a 3t boat. A bit higher torque rating though just pulled and accelerated like there was no tomorrow…Smooth and quiet… That engine should outlast the rest of the vehicle. Tip: Best to stick with one good quality brand of fuel and give it some...
I've followed already the other two very interesting "Diesel or Petrol for traveling" discussions but missed some other important questions: I'm currently in the same boat on deciding Diesel vs Petrol. I did yesterday a 3h testdrive with the Petrol and was overall super happy with the engine. My big problem was the expected reach of only 450Km....our goal is to travel mainly in Europe moslty offroad and a 450km reach is here really not a great experience. Question for the community: Did...
I’d like to know if anyone with a diesel engine has seen the ESS Eco Start/Stop function triggered ? I’ve never seen it coming in action once… Thanks.
I have this odd noise that comes in once the Diesel engine is over 80 degrees C. Until it has warmed up there is no noise and I never noticed this noise during the prototype drives. When the Diesel engine temperature gets to around 80 degrees C there is a strange pressure relief/rattle sound that comes in between the 1500 to 2000 RPM. I wonder if anyone has this on their Diesel or Petrol and what it could be??
Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but anyone have any insight on whether we can un-detune the B58 petrol engine? What would be the pros and cons of this in the Ineos? I haven't driven an IG on the highway yet, but just wanted to bring up the convo. We have a lot of 8-10 mile, 10% grade highway mountain passes here in Colorado and wouldn't mind having a bit of extra juice to get up them.
Right I don’t think I have seen this mentioned anywhere else. I have a petrol UK version. I decided to try out the exhaust sound the other day whilst sat on the drive so I revved the engine, that’s when I realised the car won’t rev past 3000rpm in park or neutral. Don’t get me wrong, the car is fine in drive and goes well, so I don’t think there is anything wrong with the engine. This has me thinking, is this just me who has this and there is something stopping it going any higher or...
Dear all, I’m proud owner of a petrol Trialmaster with 2500km on the odo. I do have a strange ticking sound from the engine at idle that I find disturbing. Went to the dealer who told me it could be a valve or a solenoid, but no worries it is all ok. Anyone having similar experience/noises? Thank you, Andras https://photos.app.goo.gl/GMVZQ3EjMVC5cLXk7
Hello, does anybody know if the petrol engine has cylinder liners as the diesel engine or if Alusil is used instead? I didn't find information regarding the B58 engine. AWo
***If anyone see's something here I need to be corrected on please let me know! I'm no expert :) **** I've been doing quite a bit of digging and questioning of the B58 guys in BMW forums. I really feel the powerplant's oil recommendations need to be region specific. I'm still going through things but there's two main specs to consider in the US. BMW LL-01 and BMW LL-04. I'm not even going to mess around with 0w20 as far as weight as concerned. 5w30/5w40 for me. HT/HS is much better in...
The owners manual sucks at having anything specific. Talks about when to change the oil but doesn’t tell you how. I know where the drain plug is and I can see the filter housing under the hood but what’s the filter that goes in the housing?
