I’m looking at both the OEM and MMR in hand, and I can see the MMR oil filter housing cap has a bypass, just like the bypass on the OEM B58TU cap. Both oil filters are the same in structure, with the MMR being slightly girthier on the top.
I believe those differences in the filter itself has to do with why the OEM is flawed in the first place. Thanks for that information.
I have not seen inside the OEM filter cap, so I did not know. To be safe I was not going to use it but do more research. There are confirmed differences between the top of the OEM Oil filter and the MMR, you can see it in the second photo in this thread. That difference and the efficiency of the MMR are still things I need to do further research on. In the meantime it is in the spares kit and not in the car.
Small update re. Toyota version for the BMW engined Supra: the part number 04152-WAA02 has been susperseded by 04152-WAA03.In my visual review of oil filters I mention the MMR here, with photos.
Thanks. That explains why I have seen both numbers. I have made that annotation over in the Oil Filter Table.Small update re. Toyota version for the BMW engined Supra: the part number 04152-WAA02 has been susperseded by 04152-WAA03.
no.Aren't magnetic plugs standard on modern cars?
I went with the MMR oil filter housing which has the valve but not the kit. I opted for a Votex drain plug with magnet and only use OEM filters every 5k miles to avoid filter issues. In the Kit is a magnetic oil sump plug, Billet Oil Filter Housing and a reusable stainless steel oil filter. Details here.
The OEM oil filter had had a reputation for failing, when used in BMW models. FYI: INEOS Part numbers for the diesel motor here.
Other kits just have just the stainless steel oil filter. I cannot see any discussion of the product.
I have bought the Kit and I am keen to use the magnetic oil sump plug and the Billet Oil Filter Housing, not sure about the filter just yet. In the past I successfully used a stainless steel filter in a Provent 200 catch can (obviously a very different use).
EDIT:
NOT USING MMR KIT FOR TIME BEING
After looking closely at the MMR oil filter and the oil cap, there are differences between these products and the OEM product.
The OEM filter cap has a Filter bypass valve (integrated into the oil filter cover) which I cannot see on the MMR oil cap. There is more research to do.
Because of the differences in design of both the MMR oil filter and the cap I will not be using the Kit until further work is undertaken. It is better to be safe than sorry.
I would NOT recommend the Kit at this time.

Bit of a penny pinch.
Pretty much. Ignorance is bliss perhaps. In a mostly aluminum engine by the time you see ferrous material it is time to do something, but being from the 60s/70s/80s the magnet makes me happy.Bit of a penny pinch.
Anyway by the time you see bits of iron , time to get the wallet out!
