Largest Functional Tire Without Mods

I just added the 285/70 r 17 Mickey Thompsons and love them.

What I did notice is that now my speedometer matches my GPS speed. On the 265 KO2s my speedometer was 3 mph faster than the GPS.

Mine is th opposite. My K02 matched, now they are 3mph different. But heck, we don't pay much attention to the speedometer in Colorado...

I think a 33â will fit with no mods what so ever. A 35â will fit the wheel wells easily with a 1.5-2â lift. The 35â might struggle with the rear door especially if you get the ladder. I donât think you can go larger than that and have a same sized spare mounted

I am using AT 35” tires. They work well, no rubbing, no blocking rear view camera, and are working well with the rear lights.

I also noted my now correct speed. Now matches the GPS. 35” is the way to go for my Grenadier without a lift kit installed.

I’m looking at the Toyo MT 255/80R17 and Mickey Baja 255/85R17. Between these two it is both a patter/use and overall height decision.

You typed Toyo 255/18r17 which is a size they don’t make. Obviously a typo

you also have those Klevers in 35x10.5 at a real 34.6", with and actual mud tread. Dirtbox stated they dont rub. Dimentional tire/tread width vs actual, I dont know. It's claiming to be an 1" wider but, those numbers are flaky too. I'd gravitate towards those if I wasn't brand suspicious.

The 255/85-17 seems like an optimal tire size. It is a shame that the M/T Baja Boss AT seems to be the only tire available in that size. I'm a little concerned though, as watching the Agile Offroad videos in Colorado and Baja, one of the Grenadiers are running this tire, and there have been multiple failures. Driver abuse may be a common thread, but troubling none the less..

Toyo has the Open Country R/T Trail in 35x10.5 -17, which is the same size. The Toyo is 8lbs lighter than the M/T.
Toyo also has the Open Country A/T III in 35x11.5-17. 1" wider and 1lb lighter.

Huge difference in load range though. The Toyo R/T has a C rating while the Mickey Thompson has an E. That's a 6 ply vs. a 10 ply. The Mickey Thompson can carry about 400 more pounds per tire.

I was just giving options as it was implied that there is only one tire in a narrow-ish 35.

In these conditions any tire is subject to failure. I do not interpret it as a weakness of the Mickey Thompson tire.

And yes this is now a perfect alternative to the Mickey Thompson 255/85R17. They have nearly identical dimensions and a similar aggressive AT style tread pattern. The biggest difference is the C load rating for the Toyo and the E rating for the Mickey Thompson. Unless you are doing heavy towing then an E rating is not a requirement for a Grenadier. Load range C tires are used extensively on Jeeps driven in very harsh terrain. If you need maximum load capacity E is the ticket but otherwise load C is fine for trail use. The Toyo also weighs a not insignificant 8 pounds less than the Mickey T, 56 pounds verses 64 pounds.

But isn't it not only the load but the strength of the sidewalls and the curb weight of a Jeep is about 1500 pounds lighter than an IG.

The R/T Trail is too AT and will just clog up. A East Coast poseur tire. The R/T Trail Pro has slightly larger voids but I need to see one in person.

Circling back to the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss.

• My stock Bridgestones 265/70R17 are 30.5" tall
• Toyo MT 255/85R17 are 33.3" tall
• Baja Boss 255/85R17 is 34.6" tall

I think I may have to go 255/85. It may make the speedo under-report, but should solve any off-road clearance issues.

The speed under-reports 4-5mph over 70mph. Under 40mph, the under-reporting is negligible. Aside from the size, I also think it's just a really great tire. IMO, road noise is negligible, but the traction is massive. I've had them through snow, mud, sand, and a lot of pavement and believe they are better than my previous experiences with my old Wildpeaks AT2s, which at the time was my favorite performing tire. I don't have experience with Toyos to contrast it with, but am happy to advocate for the MTs.

Sure, not your tire if you often drive in muddy conditions. Out West in Colorado and Utah mud is practically non existent and AT tread patterns are ideal.

I like E load tires as much as the next guy, currently have them on two of my rigs. In decades past the E rating definitely meant stronger side walls, but for modern tires it is more about load capacity via higher pressure limits than about absolute carcass strength.
