This is the difference between our cultures I suppose, individual rights over a common goal.
The community benefits from this. Does it make the community safer?
Yes, what have you lost? Not much, just an inconvenience of having to comply with the law.

Philosophically I think we all agree with you. However, that makes the assumption of proper equipment, safety protocol, and intelligence. Not everyone can be held to this level of responsibility (take the guy in the Jimmy towing the huge caravan).

When I towed on regular basis for the Scout Troop I was within every towing regulation and properly equipped even for unexpected problems. I can’t say this was true for every F150 I saw pulling a Troop trailer.

Only problem is that some people's idea of freedom is very different to others.
Some countries tend to use the word "Freedom" very freely, as if they are the only country that has it.

European towing regulations are quite different from those in the US.

So they regulate what size ball you can have on your hitch?

...and if you have two one must be 5-15mm lower than the other.
