General how to prepare the Grenadier for very poor Diesel fuel quality?

I fitted a Separ filter like the one shown above to our Td4. After the standard filter. That might sound weird, as the Defender filter has a finer filtration grade. The two reasons are: a) it is easier to mount it after the main filter b) mounting was about a second water separator not about particular filtering.

You can better stop water that way, which you can find in diluted Diesel or if the fuel stores are not sealed from water (rain) well enough. You can't prevent diesel diluted with petrol, which you can also find in some countries.

If in doubt, fill the diesel you're going to use in a clear bottle and let it stand still for a while. Is there dirt and/or water at the bottom? Can you smell petrol? Rub it between your fingers. Is it more like oil (you need some experience with that test)?

Yes no one is questioning if a filter is needed or not or how water separators work. It’s more a question of working out an inline solution that means you don’t have to mess around with bottles and confusing pump attendants etc.
The main thing is finding a filter that fits the specifications and the right micron filter. I think I have found the right filter but then making a bracket etc all takes time. The other thing to be aware of is that because Ineos allow limited access to their ECU there is currently no way to prime the filter in the field should you have to change.

Is there a way to install a deisel fuel pump after the main tank, similar to the ones that come with Auxiliary tanks with a T piece to bleed the air. Can you install a toyota type filter assembly and bracket in the engine bay as they have the hand pump. In my 100 series I prime new filter with deisel then use the factory hand primer until it goes hard. Never had an air lock or problem doing this for over 250k.

Agreed ! I’ve found a filter that has a hand primer on it so hopefully should solve the problem. The next step has been to make sure that Ineos won’t point the finger at it if I should have and fuel pump issues. The problem is Ineos keep saying I can fit the one you guys get in Aus but then don’t give me any further details. I’ve been trying to go to Australian filter specialists as I know diesel quality can been a concern. The issue is they aren’t really interested in helping as they obviously come from factory with them there.
Like I say it’s a question of fitting and make sure it won’t put any restriction in the line that Ineos could oppose.

The problem is not INEOS but BMW. I spoke with the lead person at INEOS ANZ, who wanted a second filter due to poor fuel (it was pushed by INEOS Australia and Africa). He said INEOS ANZ had to convince BMW the water separator would not damage the BMW motor. Apparantly it was all about fuel flow to the motor.

There is filter one under development for the QM by MORE4X4:

In principle, the water in diesel alarm should also work as it does not affect fuel flow and is installed before the OEM fuel filter. I had one of these on the Nissan Patrol for many years, but it is not a filter but a water detector. The glass bowl also helps catch some larger particulates and fuel additives that do not mix with diesel (like when the Nissan Dealer adds a petrol additive to a diesel car during service - not once but twice. The only two times the alarm was triggered):

The INEOS water fuel separator is still a bit of a mystery, this is all we know:

Does the database have any more information @Logsplitter or @Clark Kent ?

Sorry can’t help there. I’ve just checked the Ineos workshop manual and my access for workshop manual is petrol only. I can’t remember whether that’s a recent thing or I maybe I never had access to diesel model info in the first place.

Yes I believe Ineos have the right intentions although the fact you can’t use a diagnostic tool to prime the filter like you can on all BMWs is an Ineos issue for anyone in the field should you have to change one. I’ve looked at a big 30 micron filter that only drops the pressure by 0.01 bar and capable of 170lph. The problem is trying to get any sort of tech specs from the bmw filter just to make sure they won’t upset each other. The frustrating thing for us Europeans that want the filter is trying to get out of them whether the Aus spec retrofit is available, I’ve had two different answers and follow ups are not there. I tend to keep an eye on what you guys are doing due to your much harsher operating conditions.
Most people in the uk don’t know if they’ve got a spare tyre let alone how many fuel filters and what they do.
