Yes no one is questioning if a filter is needed or not or how water separators work. It’s more a question of working out an inline solution that means you don’t have to mess around with bottles and confusing pump attendants etc.I fitted a Separ filter like the one shown above to our Td4. After the standard filter. That might sound weird, as the Defender filter has a finer filtration grade. The two reasons are: a) it is easier to mount it after the main filter b) mounting was about a second water separator not about particular filtering.
You can better stop water that way, which you can find in diluted Diesel or if the fuel stores are not sealed from water (rain) well enough. You can't prevent diesel diluted with petrol, which you can also find in some countries.
If in doubt, fill the diesel you're going to use in a clear bottle and let it stand still for a while. Is there dirt and/or water at the bottom? Can you smell petrol? Rub it between your fingers. Is it more like oil (you need some experience with that test)?

The main thing is finding a filter that fits the specifications and the right micron filter. I think I have found the right filter but then making a bracket etc all takes time. The other thing to be aware of is that because Ineos allow limited access to their ECU there is currently no way to prime the filter in the field should you have to change.
