Third party sealed snorkels for the IG and QM

I'm seriously considering the rear facing stainless tear drop version they make. It's a lot of dough but then so is a new engine etc, and I do have to drive thru the odd ford etc. The stainless version saves me aud1,000 but like you I'll have to pay taxes for the import. I'm wondering whether this one will be a harder install than the OEM type that you installed?

It is the loudest of the 3 GrenX snorkels, with a very obvious air induction noise with the window down. Rohan likes it, I did not, you will know what you like/dislike.

After two days of driving I began to get use to the induction noise, with the window up. I prefer my OEM style GrenX which is the quietest.

Better air flow with the rear facing snorkel verse the OEM, as there is no restriction on the pipe, like there is with the OEM style.

FWIW I haven’t noticed any airflow related issues with the GrenX OEM styled snorkel and sealed airbox at this point in time. Likewise for the PowerCore G2 pod filter.

Sounds great, and yes with those UK fords would certainly be a good upgrade (cost not withstanding - however great pre-insurance).

The stainless option looks lovely (and burly), is more of traditional AUS style snorkel setup and makes great whoooshing and spooling turbo noises (but be aware they'll be ever present, especially on a RHD vehicle). The reason this setup is less expensive than the Aluminium OE-like option is due to less fabrication, less 3D printed material, less hardware and interfaces, etc. Simply, it's a bent tube and then the airbox (which is quite expensive to make) is the same. There's no going back as well, without purchasing a new fender.

Install (my rough-in, having installed snorkels on other vehicles in the past):

I would say that the stainless (tubular) versions would be a substantially more difficult install for the simple reason: you have to cut the fender at a point where the A-surface is sharply curved (90* shoulder). So the install would be entirely the same: remove the fender and OE RAI, then the airbox, et al. And while fender is off you would need to measure (multiple times) with the template and then make the cut, then de-burr, paint the exposed sheet metal, dry, edge trim, then re-assemble and install the snorkel pipe, and connect to the new airbox. At least the fender is aluminium, which is easier to cut without throwing sparks, but also more malleable so easier to deform and yield than sheet steel. A jig saw or better yet, air scissors can do this job well.

Thank you for the above, very useful. I have a good body shop around the corner that could probably make a better job of cutting the wing (and a bit of the chequer plate?). Hell, I struggled at school to colour in between the lines so I know my limits!

Just FYI Guys, Gren X have ceased production of their Aluminium raised air intakes for the Grenadier. I ordered and paid for one in mid January, then heard nothing for the next 6 weeks. Finally emailed Gren X to ask for an update and received a phone call from Rohan Alexander to say that they were no longer able to manufacture the Aluminium version. Plans were in place to possibly restart manufacturing these later in the year, but no definite dates were suggested. I asked for a refund for the $6049 I had paid, only to discover this morning that the refund has been cancelled by Gren X. I’m not sure what’s really going on here. I rang their number - Message bank. I’ve messaged Rohan Alexander and am waiting to hear back from him to find out what is going on.

Wow, that sounds awful. Can you keep us updated if there are any news to this story? I made an enquiry to them and got a quote including shipping to Europe about a month ago. Then asked how I can pay and got no reply. Since i was too busy with other things I (luckily) didn't follow up on this.

Rohan will contact you before long, based on previous experience. He can have huge numbers of messages and phone calls to return.

The shop making the aluminum snorkel had a worker get seriously injured, the shop was sold and this has caused the disruption. Looks like the new owner is not making them.

I have made a notation on the first post to reflect it being unavailable.
