Largest Functional Tire Without Mods

This will sound a bit strange but as the chassis and body come together on the production line they can sit askew slightly as there is considerable tolerance at the body chassis attachment points. I know this as when my vehicle was delivered I noticed the passenger side rear wheel appeared more sunken into the wheel well compared to the drivers side.

It took me a while to figure it out but I removed the two most rearward body mount bolts by the rear bumper and you could look up and see how the bolt holes on the body were not central to the body mount bushings. In other words, the back end of the body was sitting more pushed over toward the passenger side of the chassis which would put the inner fender and liner closer to the inside of the passenger tire because those components are attached to the body structure.

The fix was easy, I just loosened (not removed) the body bolts under the rockers (leaving the front two chassis mounts fully attached and torqued) and gently rocked the body on the chassis until the back end moved over a little. It took surprisingly little effort to move the body over but after a few pushes I was able to centralize the bolt holes in the mounts which evened everything side to side and re-torqued all the mounts.

Not advocating anyone else try and do this but just be aware each vehicle can be a little different in how it’s assembled and may explain why some rub differently from side to side with certain wheel/tire combinations.

LeTech offers a dongle to correct the speedometer (not sure what else, if anything) for the 285/75-17 size. Warner INEOS imports them.

I don't really pay attention to the speedometer anyway, so 2 mph doesn't matter. It's not like it's a Porsche or Mercedes where you can't tell how fast you are going. I guess if I lived somewhere with speed cameras I would have to pay attention.

Is anyone else running 295/70r17 on stock wheels and suspension?

I didn’t realize there was a size(height) in between 285/70r17 and 285/75r17 (which I know will rub) without going skinnier to 255/80r17. And I have not heard anyone else talk about this size yet. I want the tallest tire I can fit without rubbing and without a lift on my factory alloys and am set on BFG HD Terrains, which they have in this size, so would like to hear a few others who run this size.

I am not running 295/70R17 so cannot provide feedback on that size or 285/70 or 285/75. But if you want the tallest tire you can fit without rubbing then you want the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT in 255/85R17. The actual diameter of this tire is 34.6" and it fits without rubbing on the stock suspension and wheels. This is taller than any 295/70 or 285/75 or 285/70. The 34.6" diameter of the Mickey Thompson is both the specified dimension and the confirmed actual dimension via a measuring tape, this is unweighted at 40 psi.

However you do have to put a few washers under the top and left bottom bolts of the tire carrier for the spare to clear the small door. This works perfectly, an aftermarket relocation bracket is unnecessary and overkill for the small amount of clearance needed.

285/70s work no problem. 285/75s and anything taller require a spacer mod to open the rear hatch. I went 295/70s to get as wide as possible while minimizing gearing & speedo impact; no rubbing w/ zero aftermarket mods.

It's plug and play.

Independent of the rear hatch, the 285/75 has been reported to rub, no?

Had to use a couple of washers to offset. $4 fix. Saw it on the Dirtbox video. Works and isn’t noticeable.

I love this tire size option. Trouble is there are no true MT pattern in this size.
