New Year Service Overdue Bug

Like I said, maybe it is GPS based (post 872). But the overall accuracy is not the issue it is out to be. And not sure how losing the GPS signal causes it to reset. Like many things Grenadier just another nonsensical item.
Meh, I like the compass/altimiter because it looks good. I never actually read it. I suppose I'd be just as happy if it were a good-looking clock.

As for altitude, GPS can get it 2 ways.
1) It can assume you are on the ground and give you an altitude based on your position and a topographical database.
B) If there are enough satellites in view, it can triangulate altitude. (necessary for aircraft since they might not be on the ground)

I'd guess INEOS uses the first way. It could remember the last lat/lon if it looses GPS and display that as altitude.
Somebody going through the Eisenhower Tunnel should keep an eye on the altimeter and see what it does while traveling underground.

I totally agree that I like the altimeter mostly because it looks good. In vehicles without it something seems missing.

Generally speaking I ignore it on a day to day basis. So much so that I forget that is even there and if I want to check elevation I go to the off road menu or bring up Gaia on Carplay. If memory serves me it is also possible to add elevation to the very top bar of the center screen so the dash mounted altimeter is actually redundant.

I appear to have hit a nerve with multiple members with my altimeter comments. It was not my intent to be argumentative, only to suggest that its lack of absolute accuracy is not important whether it is GPS based or uses barometric pressure. Like many things Grenadier it is best to abandon all hope of things working exactly as you would expect them to. So many, close but not quite, aspects to this vehicle.

GPS receivers use the triangulation method to calculate elevation. This is one reason why elevations (Z) are less accurate compared to X and Y coordinates. The only time I've seen elevations calculated from a elevation database (usually Shuttle Radar 1 sec DTM data or a local area LIDAR survey) is in a post processing operation back at the office. The shuttle radar DTM for the world is approximately 12 terabytes in size so not something you can store in a vehicle system.

I can't remember where I've seen it but the Grenadier uses GPS for elevation.
Cheers
Steve

I once read the unit uses barometric but the screen uses GPS. No idea about this.
One of my free apps gives my home at 200m; another 207m. Ineos shows 203m on both gauge and screen.
Go figure!

Honest question(s)...
If the Altimeter is GPS based, and loss of the GPS signal causes it to reset, what does it actually reset to?
And what happens when it gains access to GPS signal again?
And has anyone actually gotten the Altimeter to provide a more accurate sealevel elevation?
Thanks!

Mine 1953 overdue
Is this Y26 bug only AUS?
Any comments from other countries?
Just got mine back from the dealer after a new wiper motor since before New Year and it's 2022 days overdue a service. It's not even that old. We're in the UK & dealer tells me Ineos on it. Think they'll do a global reset & cock other things up?????????????

That range of heights is well within the vertical error of a consumer grade GPS chip has fitted to our smart devices and vehicles. Typically horizontal error is in the range of 2-5m and vertical error around 10m.

I’d be very surprised if the grenadier used the barometric (pressure) altimeter for the simple reason they need to be regularly calibrated to a known height to correct for changes in air pressure.

Cheers
Steve
