I'm also in software also and this drives me nuts. I run into all the time - saving a buck here today I see costing a lot more down the road. A LOT more. Exactly the same thing here.

I was going to post this same comment. The altimeter is based on barometric pressure. There is a standard pressure for sea level but depending on current weather conditions the actual pressure can be higher than the sea level standard and when this happens the elevation can read negative. In fact the displayed elevation will change from day to day or even hour to hour because the barometric pressure at any given location is changing continuously. It is not a bug it is just how pressure based altimeters work. And it is not like the altimeter is a safety requirement in the Grenadier, it doesn't mater one iota if it is off by 100ft or more. The reading is relative and completely sufficient for land based travel. Airplanes obviously need a higher level of accuracy.
The altimeter has been confirmed by Ineos technical staff to me numerous times to be GPS based, and the "calibration" (reset) is to keep it in an area that it doesn't get GPS signal for some time
Even if it is GPS based the relative nature of accuracy is the same. It is a reference not an absolute measure as is needed for aircraft. For land based automotive use +-50 ft is more than enough resolution and even +- 100ft is not really an issue.
