When I travel, Il like NOT to show my luggage, and have the back seat free, to carry people if needed (hitch-hikers or any other people).
And although I like to sleep in my tent, I want to have the possibility to sleep in the car if needed.
I was not so happy with my lousy solution for sleeping in the car (this thread, post 39).
Therefore I improved it (using some ideas of other people). I still use the ratchet straps as a basis, but I bought also two extendable camping poles in a camping gear shop in Belgium, but of course they are "made in China":

I bought a big hardboard plate of 3mm thickness, at the DIY (Do It Yourself) store and I asked them to cut it to the right size. Total cost 17€! I rounded the corners myself.
The bigger panel has a size of 140mm X 55mm, the smaller one is 75X55, and I had also one of 39,5X55 for my new "side-door-table"

The width of the panels are a bit less than the width of the open space when the "single" seat is down, and the length of the longest panel allows me to place it thwarted on the straps in the back of the car when I don't need the bed. The longest one is the upper one.

I am quite tall (1m78), therefore I wanted like 2m length. This can only be accomplished If you move the passenger seat (Left Hand Drive car)as much forward as you can, and lifting it to the maximum.

I use my "new camping table" for supporting the pole at the front, but it isn't strictly necessary.

To fix the plates together I drilled some holes in the plates and inserted some housings of syringes, but you could do this with anything else

My self-inflatable mattress is slightly too wide, but i knew this. Final result:

But,, while testing my build, I felt the need to grab something when leaving "my bed", therefore I made a handgrip. This was also copying somebody, but i don't remember whom.

Next Month I will travel again, and will test "in real life" my design.![]()
