So the idea of this build thread is to track what I’ve done and to keep getting suggestions on new improvements or changes going forward. I have a ’86 ex-British Army Defender 110 that I’ve spent years upgrading and enjoying. The build thread to that is here if anyone is interested. I also have a beat-up ’95 Range Rover Classic that I used as my airport car and will eventually upgrade for my son.
When I saw the first rumblings of the Grenadier I was hooked. Although I’m a Land Rover guy, the new Defender left me just as disappointed as Sir Jim. I put down the the deposit on day 1 and built my truck that first day I could on the Ineos site. I expect I would have most likely been one of the first in North America to take delivery, but I ordered the tow hitch- so it took a couple of extra weeks (totally worth it since Ineos ended up comping the tow hitch for the delay). My idea was to build the truck with all the options that couldn’t easily be added later. The only option I regret not getting was the “Power Take Off” rear household plug. Otherwise I ordered a standard station wagon with most of the Trialmaster options.
Since this is our primary family car, most of my mods have been interior creature comfort items. I do plan on keeping this thing forever, so exterior off-road/camping type modifications will be added after it goes from family hauler to my daily driver/adventure-mobile. I’ll list them in the order I think gave me the greatest improvement over the stock truck (which I love).
Modifications so Far:
Wolfbox G900 Pro rearview mirror with 67 Designs mount - Game changer, especially with a full load of stuff in the back.
Agile Off Road Steering Stabilizer - Pretty common mod but it really helped the return to center and the vagueness on the highway. I wasn’t super unhappy with the stock but it’s a big improvement IMO.
Melville & Moon canvas seat covers - I have little kids so these were a no-brainer. They’ve held up great despite kid goop and many road trips. They look amazing and add a bunch of extra pockets.
Owl/Rosen Aviation sun visors - The stock visors are almost completely worthless. These were pricey but a huge QOL enhancement.
Driver’s side grab handle - I’m not tall so this helps a ton. Doesn’t block visibility at all. Had the dealer install the factory RHD handle because the aftermarket hadn’t produced these yet. The Agile Off Road handle looks nice.
Suma Side mirrors - Shockingly big upgrade to side/rear visibility.
Octodyne Keyhole LED light - Great addition to be able to see at night or in garages. Hard to believe they didn’t include this from the factory.
Grenadier USA Machined Console/Cup Holder - Pricey but looks awesome, fits the interior of the truck and a big enhancement to the types of drinks we can bring.
Ebay Rear seat brackets for more rear seat recline - The kids really appreciate these for long trip comfort.
JBL Nano Sub - I am a big music guy, but I didn’t realize what I was missing as far as sound until I had a loaner with the “Premium sound”. I know that there are a million better options, but the ease of install and the fact that I don’t need a high end system led me to go with the factory option (bought on eBay and ordered the bracket from the dealer)
Grenadier Works rear camera light blockers - makes the backup camera way easier to see at night.
Supra Shifter - Fits the look of the truck way better than the BMW banana shifter.
OEM Raised Air Intake - Installed by dealer about a year after purchase.
OEM Utility Belt under rear windows - Will eventually mount some jerry cans or sand ladders on these.
Grenadier Works transfer case cable clamp
Dealer installed Windshield PPF
Grenadier USA CNC Machined Transfer case knob - Didn't like the feel of the OEM plastic
Owl Offroad hood latch
Owl Offroad rear door handle
Lettering for hood and rear door inlays
Have to install the Grenadier Works Rear gate pull handle.
Next up is most likely the Bison Gear rear side storage and the Diabolical Inc Upper Deck cargo shelf to help maximize rear space.
