Fuel tank auxiliary

Fuel odor
Does anyone have a Long Range America or Brown Davis tank with a fuel odor outside the Grenadier?

I have had mine for 2 months now, and in the past 2 weeks I am smelling gasoline outside the passenger side. The is no odor inside. There is no odor inside the fuel fill door/gas cap.

The odor is around the right rear quarter panel. It is in my garage and the garage is about 75° - 80 (27°C).

Has anyone experienced this?

How is your evap/charcoal canister breather situated?

I think my charcoal canister is blocked. I’ve had trouble for quite a while when filling with petrol, where the fuel pump keeps clicking off. When I had it serviced a few months back I asked for it to be checked and they said they had blown it through a bit with an airline. This helped a bit but didn’t eliminate the problem. Now with my auxiliary LRA fuel tank fitted the problem seems worse. It took ages yesterday to fill up the main tank with pump clicking off so many times. I think the charcoal filter is above the main fuel tank so a pita to replace and probably very costly too. I’ll phone my dealer on Monday to see how to proceed. A bit of a pain as I’ve only just got it back after having all the other works done. Anybody have any ideas? I see the breather connection is behind the fuel filler so could be blown through again. ?

Suggest checking to see if the breather hose has sagged somewhere along its length causing a partial restriction. It may be just a subtle bend ...which is enough to cause interference.
I had a frustratingly similar issue with the BD aux tank. Bowser pump constantly stopping and diesel fuel was "spitting" back from the filler neck. Finally discovered a loop section of the ample length breather hose had sagged just enough to restrict full breather operation. Secured the loop with cable ties so that the bend radii didn't cause any restriction. Problem solved.
(I could shorten the breather hose I suppose but I've left the excess to enable maintenance to be done without having to disconnect multiple hoses. ..)

Thanks Denis. Is this the case with petrol as well as diesel Grenadiers. Mine is a petrol version.

Hi Logsplitter,

I had the same blowback problem about a year ago, and suggested where Denis should look when he had the same problem, in my case I shortened the fast filler hose to remove any possibility of the hose ever kinking again, the problem has never occurred since.
But the problem in mine and from what I could understand Denis also had was the filling of the aux tank and not the main tank, for instance if I left the aux tank full ( no use of the transfer pump ) and just filled the main tank there was no problem, but if the aux tank had been emptied I had the blowback problem prior to the fix.
If your aux tank is full and you still have the problem then you may have a blockage after the T junction where the auxiliary tank fast filler hose connects, or an entirely different problem such as the charcoal filter you suggested, or a combination of both, a kink in the aux fast filler hose may be making it worse.

Cheers,

Steve.

Yes it’s legal..I just installed long range American 24 gallon tank… it’s awesome
Sadly though, not in Kalifornia. Not a political statement, just a "they haven't got a CARB sticker yet" statement. In doing my homework, it appears they began to sell them in CA and then got dinged by CARB. If you read the fine print, it says they may not even be legal anywhere in the US. So no testing at all I suppose. (Get one on you car while you can.) Even if I installed one, 8 years from now it's inspection time and it seems they go out of their way to keep me from acquiring one... I'm contemplating contacting LRA and asking them if they want a guinea pig to do the leg work for a CARB installation and inspection. A California CARB cert makes it EPA legal as well, and all those questions go away. Or maybe someone in Arizona wants to drive over to an inspection location in CA? Who knows. Seems like it's going to be jerry cans for a while.

Did you upgrade your springs for this? Does the ride change dramatically when full?
You can definitely tell you've got twice the fuel. This becomes more apparent if like me you also have a rooftop tent. I'm also adding drawers soon. I already have air bags that I originally used for just towing, but now I use them to level out the suspension when camping (water, gear, full fuel in both tanks, etc. its all heavy). On Wednesday I'm having the heavier duty springs installed which hopefully doesn't make the ride when empty too harsh.

All that being said, out of all the mods I've done, the Long Ranger tanks is by far the most impactful. Doubling the range is key for the type of off-roading and even just highway driving when towing that I do.

Please let us know you opinion on the heavier springs as I am sure many are interested, myself included, in getting the LRA tank installed.

I’ve had an LRA tank fitted and upgraded my springs to the heavy duty OEM black marked springs, plus airbagman air bags, in the rear springs for help when overlanding and heavily loaded. bit stiffer ride when not fully loaded but all good otherwise.

I have the LRA tank, BUZZ drawers, ICECO fridge, Owl rack. I get by with the stock springs, but then I am not loading the entire back of the Grenny up with other stuff.

I have measured, that if I have a full tank on the main tank, and then fill up the LRA tank, I get 3/8" more sag at the rear fender well. Not enough for me to worry about, and I don't notice driving. Adding a rooftop tent could change my opinion, but I am not going to add a tent, so I am happy.
