Front Drive Shaft Update

That’s the spare that I carry. Same as with Teraflex, they engineer these. Dana did it originally and they are all made in China now. Vendors are just putting their name on them and distributing.
Another member here called me today actually and he said Tera told him directly that their joint is made in China. It's all Chinese these days.

The guy from Tera suggested he would inquire about modification of the boot but it sounded a bit like he was just trying to appease.

I am hoping Plan A for me will be ready in a couple more weeks. If it works I will certainly disseminate the info as soon as I can. Still waiting to hear back on 100% confirmation they can build what I want and do it properly.

here is the answer from Dana Afetermarket Group to the request for the original CV joint only:

Dear ...,
I would like to inform you that unfortunately the material is not available for sale.
Thank you for your understanding!

😦

A puzzling response given they make parts readily available for the drive shafts used in other vehicles, Jeeps in particular.

I think I trot this out every time we get to this point in the discussion and then someone tells me it won't work. Go outside the flange with a snap over boot that can be held in place with a clamp. Maybe you have to pack your CV with an extra 6oz of grease due to the extra volume. Of course this isn't exactly the boot shape but the concept is the same.

As @Dokatd mentioned before, this would cause the grease to flow into the boot, harden and eventually fail do to the boot being lopsided/ out of round.

Does anyone here have a connection to Couch? If they're willing to pursue portals then the CV issue would seem small by comparison.

I have been talking with him. He is out country and won't get back till mid Feb. I am getting my truck shipped to him mid Feb for flat tray and box.

Cornhead grease?
Haven't heard that term for a long time.

The grease used in the Rzeppa joint is basically Cornhead. That's part of the problem. The grease thins out and run freely then firms up later on once cool. If it gets into an external boot it will never warm up enough to flow again.

I'm right behind you! I'm on track to get the pass through canopy camper on the flatbed some time in March.

Please post up how yours turns out.

Will do, you've been mentioned in our conversations. You going to Grenadier Gathering?

I’m hoping to go. I won’t know my April schedule until mid March. And then if I get the time off, I have to pick which Grenadier to take. 😆

You going to make it?

Talked to the driveline shop that is working on a larger CV solution. The adapter is machined and it accepts the larger diameter CV. It does require a new driveshaft. They are working on a custom boot for the CV. The CV is an off the shelf part for a Porsche.

You know, I love my Grenadier. I love the design, the build quality, and the concept.

But I can’t get behind this front driveshaft disaster. The front driveline is a calamity of errors compounded by frankly shit steering system and alignment geometry.

If vehicles are catching on fire (yes, they’re lifted, but it’s only time before a stock vehicle suffers the same fate) there will be inevitable publicity and media coverage on it, and Ineos will have little to offer.

If I’m being honest with myself, this is the worst driving and handling vehicle I’ve owned; and in 15 years of testing and writing about almost every single four-wheel drive released, it is the worst driving new vehicle I have driven. I knew this going into it, but I still bought one because I believed in it.

I’ve tried to justify that the steering makes the vehicle “classic” but I’m just tired of driving something so exhausting. It has never, ever driven straight despite the paying the dealer (Arrowhead) twice to align it, and another specialty shop as well. I am constantly fighting the heavy steering to keep the vehicle straight.

Meanwhile I’ve driven some Grenadiers that seem perfectly fine—particularly the ones offered to media, and for some reason my Father-in-law’s Grenadier.

I’m sure some folks are having lovely experiences, and I am both happy for them and jealous. But I think a lot of folks are genuinely having bad experiences.

We are planning some serious travel with ours for 2027; travels that involve very remote places.

I want to enjoy my travels; I do not want to stress about a driveshaft failure.

This might be the end for me.

Must be a 930 joint, I’m familiar with them, but the real engineering will be the boot.

@mattexplore what are your thoughts when you drive the QM? Or has your friend mentioned similar feedback as you?
