What you are looking at is a plunge style CV. Notice how deep the cup is at the end. It will be run at the pinion end so the grease doesn’t run out of the CV joint.I notice the Ranger has an external boot.

Would this be more durable?
There must have some reason that Ford decided to do it differently.
Edit, it had momentarily escaped me that the Ranger and its derivatives have independent front suspension.. So the CV joints aren't doing much.
