Spot on, the insulation is for sound and the cover is for visual appeal. I replaced mine with a '24 BMW engine cover and removed the insulation when I swapped the air filter for improved air flow the unintended benefit is hearing the turbo spool up.If I remember rightly, it is just noise suppression and aesthetics. I have to dig back many years into my memory and it's not at it's best anymore
And then you get the carbon fibre engine covers for people who......Thinking back, wife had a base speck car that didn't have the engine cover but the higher spec ones did. Obviously poor people are older and have impaired hearing so there is no need to suppress noise quite so much.
