Two attachment points on the OEM B58 engine cover failed on my G. During a recent visit to the dealership, I asked whether a new engine cover would be covered under warranty. The dealership’s response was, “No, but we would be happy to order a new one for you at a cost of approximately $700.”

My answer: “No, thank you.”

I was able to source a BMW B58 engine cover for about one-quarter of the dealership’s price. It’s not an Ineos Grenadier cover, but I actually prefer the look compared to the OEM version. It just arrived, and it’s an exact match—including the insulation—and fits like a glove.

We do have less expensive options available and in this case it has a BMW warranty. For reference:

The dealership also offered to replace the engine cover retaining pins for $400. Again, “Thank you, but no.” The retaining pins did not need replacement. For reference, the retaining pin costs about $5.00 each.

I like the looks of the BMW cover over our factory one.

Absurd Dealer service pricing like you encountered will alienate G owners.

After the 1st dealer service , poking around I noticed one of the retaining pins/ grommets on mine was dislocated. The cover wasn't down properly.
I've put a dab of rubber grease on each to mitigate heavy handedness.

Looks Better, of course, no cover probably looks the best. Remembering when engines had no cosmetic plastic trim/ sound insulation..

Looks to me when reinstalling the cover it didn’t get positioned quite right and whoever was installing it gave it a couple of quick whacks with their hand and busted the attachment socket off. When I do my oil changes I take a few extra moments to make sure the pins are lined up and gently push the cover down. If that happened at a recent service I’d for sure be bringing it up for replacement as nobody’s vehicle should be leaving a shop in worse shape than it went in.

Totally agree - the under hood presentation and access of most modern vehicles leaves a lot to be desired. Even my old Rover V8 lump looks a bit more handsome than what you commonly see in vehicles today. Some manufacturers have even stopped putting in vanity covers altogether and when you lift the hood/bonnet you are staring a nothing more than a mess of wires and hoses.
