Thought I would post a confirmed figment and a great price for an air filter. As others have noted the factory filter is a BMW part number 13718635102. I found the Febi Bilstein brand at RM European on sale for $7.11 so I purchased two of them.

Most likely a resonance/expansion chamber to help tune impulses in the intake tract to help quiet it down or possibly eliminate unwanted turbulence of the airflow to help the air move more smoothly through the intake increasing efficiency slightly.

there is another intake resonator that is locate before the air cleaner box you can see it here
the round cap like thingie

does hurt horse power some so some people remove them
there is a intake resonator delete that removes it. easy to do

Thanks, I had never heard of it.
I can’t find the intake resonator delete for Ineos. Where can i find them?

Two things to add to this:

1) there are six screws on the housing that need to be loosened to lift it (two on the side of the engine were hard to see standing on the ground).

2) when I lifted my old filter out there was a foam pad that is connected to the floor of the housing. Does this need to be replaced too? It is screwed in, unlike the photos in the original post.
