UK Specific trailer regulations for European driving.

For us Brits there are some new rules recently brought in around towing in Europe.


In a nutshell, if you go to Europe with ANY trailer over 750kg you will need to register that trailer and add an additional registration plate.

For some reason this hasn't been widely reported so might help some of you. I only stumbled across this a few days ago myself.

It seems it applies to commercial trailers over 750kg gross and all trailers over 3500kg gross. Upon reading the guidance it is apparent that the definition of "commercial" could be tricky and European countries may take enforcement action against unregistered non-commercial trailers anyway. Seems a bit of a muddle and probably safest to register regardless.

Actually one of my reasons for posting is the almost secret change in the regs.

Correct that in 2019 it was required for commercial trailers over 750kg, but as of October this year it is ALL trailers over 750kg.

It includes caravans of course, but you are not allowed to tow a caravan with a Grenadier unless it is an Airsteam or Ozzie inspired off road trailer.
