Stuck at Cape York

I had to go back to look for his crossing and noticed he didn't upload it, doesn't take a genius to work out why. If one goes through water, and way above the max wading depth, that's on them and noone else.

Ineos aren't perfect but saying an environmental factor caused it...to me at least, that implies water in the engine. They should just come out and say it, but yes could be a legal viewpoint.

There's loads of hateful comments on social media about the Gren and it seems, as someone else described it, they've now gone feral.
Here is video that no one commenting has watched. It also looks like it was edited to remove Arthur's crossing. It all went down on the Frenchman Track.

This bit at the start shows water above the air inlet.

The flow looks left to right too.

After watching that video, weeks ago, I went out and measured how high the water went, using my car. Well over 800mm. It looks like the wheel dropped into a pothole while crossing - sh*t happens. The OEM RAI and airbox leak like a sieve, allowing in dust and water (if you go to deep). As INEOS tells owners, a RAI is not a sealed snorkel for water crossings.

I posted back in September that is why I bought a sealed snorkel from GrenX. I was in two minds before watching that video, but not after.

The number of “I was just about to go buy one right this hour, then I watched this video and now I’m never buying one and I hope they fail!” comments are almost humorous. Sure you were. It’s too easy in this modern age to destroy someone without revealing the whole truth, which oftentimes reveals the fault doesn’t lie with the one attacked. Ask any cop, many times the guy making all the noise is the one at fault.

The Grenadier has 800mm / 31.5" inches of wading depth. The broken Grenadier appears to be on stock tires which are about 31" tall. That crossing at 10:20 in the video sure looks deeper then the recommended depth. For reference, the bottom edge of the fender flare and the middle of the headlight is 37", the top of the fender is 45". There are plenty of places in the video where they had water to the top fender. This is on the owner. It's actually amazing that they all didn't flood.

Is John Canny the de facto tour leader for that group ? Does he do these tours for his Utube channel ?

It is only speculation (entirely by people who were not there) that deep water was the root cause of the failure, and there are plenty of other things that could have happened. As I recall (I'd have to rewatch the videos to be sure) at the time those present thought that a rock may have been thrown up and broken a turbo oil line. My point is that unless or until we know what killed the motor it is rather futile to speculate and no-one should make assumptions.

It is extremely regrettable that Ineos has not shared the findings that led it to conclude it was 'environmental' with the owner since unless or until they do the internet will be alive with speculation and the bad-mouthers will have a field day - as indeed they appear to be doing.

The fact that the owner's insurance company has accepted liability indicates to me (assuming that Australian insurers are as reluctant to accept any liability as UK ones are) that there is compelling evidence that it was accidental damage not a warrantable breakage, because they would not accept liability unless convinced and they won't be stupid - the evidence must be compelling. There should therefore be no question that Ineos is avoiding any responsibility. Do not forget that it was Ineos that towed the dead car for 2600km and undertook the investigation at its expense in order to ascertain if it was a warrantable issue. Most makers and insurers I have dealt with would not have moved it an inch until the cause had been determined.

Finally I have to wonder what would have happened if the vehicle had been an L663 Defender (it would probably still be in Cape York) or a Toyota. If it had been a classic Defender it would have been repairable at the roadside of course!
This fellow broke down a couple of times outback towing heavy with his new defender. Has other videos of those breakdowns but this one is a summary of how LR dealt with it. Not too bad IMHO.

I kinda wish John had held off on posting this until it was resolved fully and the cause was known if it could be. This one issue has done more to damage the brand on social media than the drive shaft issue.
Well there is this...
He knew he had the scoop and at 35mins with those views 🤔 it's working out nicely but he definately rushed it out the door to say...nothing.

John is a member on the forum and he may well drop in to add his further thoughts

I like John and appreciate his earlier work but he's lost my subscription after this one.

I like John's videos and will keep watching but this video created quite the mess.

Sure did not look like much. If its that easy to ingest water, I would have done it. I have had water over the hood. That being said, clarity on what went wrong stops the rumor mill.

Canny should have waited until it was resolved fully, agree this has given the brand and undeserved punch in the goollies.
Ineos Australia needs to get on top of this and advice what the actual failure was caused by, Canny and Arthur Know what caused it
Anyone who has been to the Cape knows what "environmental damage" means or is caused by up there!

Make sure I understand correctly, IA gave him a new motor, no out pocket cost to owner.

The public is upset that IA won't release the cause. Also, IA was going to have the largest sales numbers ever in Australia. This is based upon the YT comments of people about to buy one but won't now.

If IA stated the engine blew because of water crossing, they would set a precedent for future incidents. You would get fools going over max water levels and expect a new engine.
Don't u love all the bogans with 150K burning a hole in their pockets, about place their order and changing their mind everytime a Grenadier gets a flat tyre

More likely man babies in their mom’s basement (or for a more Aussie analogy a clapped out Jayco in their mum’s back yard). The only order they would have cancelled recently would be for a high powered electric scooter on Alibaba.

He's definitely not a bogan but I reckon ASPW will be lubricating his tonsils and tweaking his script.

Standby for "I told you so" in 5, 4, 3, 2..
