Statistics/Poll Thread: Front driveshaft CV joint failures

I installed lift springs and 35s at maybe 500 miles, the terra joint maybe at 9K. And made it to about 25K before failure. With some hard off road use. But, never even got to shocks. But some have gotten more miles, some less. Probably above average.

Probably worth mentioning on future shaft failures what the part number of said shaft is. So far as I am aware there are two;

Original one in first photo, replacement in the second. Will be more data to see whether the average failure mileage improves with the new part number one.

I don’t think so many of us should be experiencing failures at the boot - one could argue that a lift exceeded the design parameters, but on stock suspension with stock wheels and stock tires? That is either faulty design or materials defect. And a lot of us are getting close to the warranty threshold. As you can tell, I am grumpy with them (IA) this morning. Having the engine go into limp mode while driving on the highway at 65mph while on cruise control set me off. The CV boot was just icing on the cake. My dealer, however, is being great about it. Super helpful, thorough and accommodating. Props to Knauz - thanks, ya’ dumb FIBs. Go Packers.

Yeah the boot failures could be the end for this current edition of Grennies. I'm going on a week long trip next week and keeping my fingers crossed all goes well. That's not how it should be. Got a spare driveshaft just in case. Hope none of the bolts are seized up..... Love the vehicle otherwise.

They could retrofit the current shaft FOC with a new boot material - or give us an extended warranty on this issue.

What if we all shipped our failed cv-joints to IA’s NJ headquarters as part of an awareness campaign? They certainly know from warranty work, social media there is an issue already but a few dozen motivated owners shipping boxes direct to HQ to stir the pot might be interesting. The longevity of these components, even for stock vehicles, is a high priority issue for us and if not resolved could push us away from the brand over time.

I’ll ask Knauz if they could do that for me or give me back the failed one - it might already be in the trash though. What surprised me is the low available inventory of spares in the US. You would think there would be a stockpile! Does anyone have an address?

Not sure who will be in Moab this time from Ineos, but it’s going to be a frying pan.
I wish I was there to organize a rebellion. Let’s all pitch in for t shits that say something like “Shafted by Ineos”. We need to do something so Ineos stops ignoring this issue.

I'd be in if we could get an actual design. Maybe an outline drawing of a front drive shaft with some Grenadier artwork around it.

When mine failed and was replaced, I was specifically asked to hand over the broken shaft so same could be sent back to IA for analysis. Shame but I did not have a choice.

If they insist on getting them back for analysis then they must 🤞be looking at the issue

I am certain they will have looked into the failures. Whether they decide to do anything about it for us current owners or for new coming vehicles I am doubtful. Still hoping some mad rocket engineer owner type chap comes up with a 3rd party permanent fix!

Well, for those who do go to Moab, I certainly think it should be a discussion. Who has had the CV boot tear or drive shaft failure on stock suspension (also tires in my case)? Me, @Logsplitter - who else? It just shows the inherent weakness in the design and material on the boot. They need a fix - we can’t be forced to swap these out every year or two. I’m already getting the lectures from my wife and pressure to unload it - “imagine what this service visit would have cost out of warranty - this is irresponsible- etc.” I KNOW it’s irresponsible- that’s the whole point. Ineos needs to provide me the basic robust design and reliability to be irresponsible with impunity. 34k miles. Standard 36k service, drive shaft, windshield spray pump, replace left turn stalk, reprogram everything (random limp mode glitch). I don’t need them giving my wife another reason to gloat.
