New Year Service Overdue Bug

I apologize for this potential over-pursuit. I remain flummoxed by this Scenario 1 versus Scenario 2 statement from Ineos Automotive. I am too far from a dealer to help myself. If you live close to an Ineos dealer, have kept good service records on your car, and your Service overdue (way overdue) warning is on the display... a challenge -

1) Visit your dealer and request a Service overdue reset. Nothing more.
2) If they ask if you are due for service now, say, "Yes, look at my display. That's what it says. I'd like a reset to clear that message, please."
3) If they decline to clear your warning because you may not be legitimately due for service, please ask why. And tell us what they say.
4) Do not let them touch your car.

We're ALL Scenario 1, according to what my display shows. What happens if you are well under a proper service date and you get a reset anyway? Why is there a Scenario 2? Can any dealer address these questions? We'll stay in the dark while waiting for Ineos to explain things. Be forewarned, dealers may not be able to provide insight on this topic.

Okay folks this one is dedicated to people losing their sugar honey ice tea. Our software may be far from perfect, but you know what, it's not JLR. On the defender forum and Facebook, there has been a over the air update which is common occurrence. You get them about every other month. They update something, lights, sound, shift pattern. Well everyone is losing it because the most recent update is bricking the vehicle and it will not shift out of 2nd gear. They are getting gear box malfunction and here is the kicker. You don't know if it effects you until you drive it. It is Russian roulette and you can't roll the software back. It needs to be towed to dealers to get fixed. Then if you have a mild hybrid the 48v dc to dc if failing. You can't drive the vehicle without it and the current backorder has parts not arriving till the end of Feb. I'll take my 2175 days out of service to what they are facing. What surprises me is no news outlet is blasting it all over the place.

I don’t know why people are still freaking out about this bug. It’s not that serious. People are so impatient 🙄
I think ADVAW8S has a point. When you go to the dealer to resolve the service interval issue is your new service interval set to the correct value or just reset to "0".

Thanks

Actually, it's a Land Rover defender. Ineos makes the grenadier.

(sorry, I couldn't help myself)
I came here to write that. You beat me to it. My gift from my kids this year:

Late to the party…

I should probably check if this was taken care of when we had the dealer flush our wiper fluid - oh the joys of Silicone based fluid contamination…

What happened?
Someone decided to pour Rain-X All Season 2-in-1 ( containing Silicone ) into the wiper reservoir. This appears to have mixed with the remaining ( non-Silicone ) fluid in the system and the mess turned into a lovely gel… Do not recommend.

On topic - Does anyone have a good non-Silicone or Alcohol based wiper fluid which is safe?

We need this guy to buy a Grenadier and make a video!!!! He got Lucid attention very quickly and they seem to have a great response and plan. Maybe he can help us get some Ineos movement as well??? Lucid is fairly new company as well with a 1000% more complex vehicle, so if they are willing to act quickly maybe Ineos can too??

What do you exactly want to be done!

Late to the party. I think by this point we all know the head unit software is a joke. I'm more annoyed about the fact that the altimeter constantly says I'm under the sea, and that the fuel gauge doesn't account for tank shape. It's also not that big a deal. The car still works.

IA will likely get their contractor to do a bug fix for this specific issue and nothing else, then get dealers to do an update at the next annual service. If you don't live near a dealer, you are out of luck.

The codebase clearly needs to be refactored, or even rebuilt from scratch. They won't do this because they don't have the in-house skills, it might take years for the same contractor to do it (with no guarantee of quality), and there are probably licensing issues that prevent them from hiring someone else.

We saw how long it took to add a toggle button for ADAS.

If they open sourced it we could probably get Claude Code to fix it in about 10 minutes though :D

Everything is speculation when it comes to anticipating IA software work. I suspect that Scenario 1 was hastily written and that IA is doing everything possible to restore normal functionality of the service warning. If a dealer resets your warning counter in the normal manner, then Ineos has until 1 January 2027 to install a fix, I suspect. No problem, right? Oh wait, (...remember adas).

I know nothing authoritative about any of this.

Another option, without needing to understand the problem, is that they are considering disabling the service counter altogether forever. I don't know about the legal ramifications of that. This solves the current overdue warning AND gets owners off their back regarding the inability to self-clear (reset) the overdue warning. Similarly, if they understand the problem well enough now to foresee a doomsday solution path of big bucks and a timetable of over one year, then toggle off the warning completely and be done with it.

Or another option once the may fix it is to reprogram software to reduce the frequency with which the service reminder pops up. Maybe 3 times initially but then only every 1000km / miles.

Wow. Imagine trying to avoid a major accident and the car says nah you didn't signal first lets just hit that obstacle in the road instead.
I had that exact scenario happen to me on a current model bmw X6 in Auckland NZ a few years ago when car in front suddenly stopped for no reason whilst doing 100 - I swerved to avoid and this bloody bmw tried to drag me back into the lane and ram the car in front. Thankfully I could yank the steering wheel and override the “assistance” but it was blooming close. And that was after I’d manually turned all the assistance settings “off”. According to BMW dealers the off doesn’t switch off completely though hence the unwanted assistance that nearly killed me.

Cos they know it is so trivial that it doesn’t merit a story…. Just saying.
