Grenadier Servicing Price Australia

I just picked my Grenadier up from local Landrover mechanic.
I supplied parts and oil.
Parts cost me $514, oil cost me $89.25 Total $603.25. Mechanic charged me $750. So $1,353.25 total. Dealer quote was $1,240 total so it cost me $113.25 extra to get the job done by Landrover mechanic. However he is only 10 minutes away compared to 3 hours each way to dealer and about $150 or more in fuel. Dealer allowed 2 hours to do service and the local one took 5 hours but did a hell of a lot more than was on the list. I am extra happy with the outcome. Of course he can’t reset the service warning so somewhere down the Track when near a dealer I will get it done.
That $750 labour from your mechanic is pretty steep, not sure what they could have spent 5 hours doing? I paid $350ish, that included a review of warranty work done by the dealer, a few extra things I wanted done on top of the service schedule list, and all the things they want to do themselves that aren't on the service schedule. And the service itself...

Can't remember exactly what I spent on parts but I think $300ish, mix of aftermarket and interstate Ineos dealer (was cheaper to get them sent from QLD than to buy in SA).

For fluids I just wait until I see a big sale ad for one of the generic auto parts stores on TV or something and then check out their websites, I've generally got all my engine oil (Penrite) at ~$80 for 10L.

As for all the warranty work, I've given the car a run, had it serviced elsewhere, taken it on a trip and then looked over it again properly. It's arguably worse now than it was when I took it in...

Engine main seal (or something else in that area, oil from bell housing) leaking a lot more, sump also leaking now (possibly from getting removed to replace the main seal).

Replacement HVAC unit is terrible, can't heat the car, can't cool the car, can barely blow air around the car despite being able to hear the fan speed go up as you twist the dial. The old one leaked condensation onto the passenger footwell but at least it worked!

And the power steering fluid reservoir has failed again or was not replaced in the first place.

Have you tried the HVAC bleed procedure?

He did a lot more than was on the service list.
Which to be honest I looked at the list and was surprised how little was on it.
As he had never serviced one before he took longer, we had discussed that up front.
He also found lose wiring and fixed it along with a few other screws etc.
He checked the diff oil despite it not being on the list etc

My mechanic did the same (diff oil) and had to top it up. Service was $550 inc filters. Just gave it a good looking over.

Yeah, with the old and new HVACs. Original one had a condensation leak, filled up the passenger footwell, second just doesn't really work. Dealer said the replacement is another LHD one installed upside down as per RHD cars as they couldn't get any of the new RHD specific ones, which the first batch of have problems with too. A redesigned RHD specific one is in the works but won't be available until next year at which point it will be swapped over, might be a hot summer in the car...

As for other items, they've now accepted it is the main seal leaking oil so will get replaced, not in any rush, been waiting 1.5 years already for it to be done, will let them do it when it goes in for the HVAC replacement as that's a weeks work on it's own.

Forgot about the power steering reservoir leak when I took it in, will need to get back in touch with them about that! It's a standard BMW part and they are prone to leaks (according to my mechanic), may end up just buying one from the local BMW dealer and having my mechanic swap it over at next service if it isn't going to cost too much.

1 issue I forgot to mention was that my left front door widow switch didn't work after the round of warranty work, fortunately that was a quick fix in the carpark, they did a recall on the door locks and when putting the door back together it hadn't been plugged in... All good now!

Dealer servicing is expensive... it is hard to justify.
I get my servicing done by a local mechanic, Bosch and RAA approved, deal with a lot of new high end cars but also 30s/40s ex- army Jeeps etc. And everything in between!

I buy all the consumables when I find them on sale at auto parts stores (filters and fluids etc. and keep them at home), get the odd bit from a local BMW (or Toyota dealer, whichever is cheaper) dealer if that's the only option. They supply any generic stuff I miss and do the labour.

I get them to do a few more things than the Ineos servicing schedule asks for because of how I use the car and they do a few extra things outside of it all they like to do (but check with me first, and I go with it).

Depending on what's done services are typically ~$750 out of my pocket. They either give me back items taken off the car for me to clean up and use as spares or show me what they've taken off of it to dispose of, get rid of all the waste fluids and give me back anything I supplied them with that wasn't used. They're top notch!

Only downside is that that they can't read detail Ineos fault codes, clear service warnings, do soft/firmware updates or recall work as part of the service...
