Front Drive Shaft Update

What a blast from the past...
Justin Dermody... he definitely left his mark on Discoweb. One of the guys talking a big game, to vanish off the face of the Earth.
Lots of the old group have moved on. I largely lost touch when I moved into Unimogs. I still wheel with Bill Ritchie and Ed Mcgoffin and a few others. Saw Steiner not to long ago and didn't even realize it. I miss those days for sure.

A pretty substantial fraction of the "old group" (who still go off pavement) moved to Grenadiers.

That article about sums up Justin's track record. Can never seem to make it to big dance... Good old memories and fun times all around.

Did somebody say RTI? 😁 I found an RTI event this weekend near me.

"Fully Cloaked" - on full Metacloak suspension, 35x12.5s, extended brake lines, TCC front and rear bumpers, and front sway bar disconnected. I can happily report that there is NO rubbing, all tires clear.

Well that thing certainly look 'fully kitted', afraid to ask what it weighs. But more to the point, you found an RTI event, what was your 'number' and what degree ramp was it?

7340 lb to be exact. That's with both fuel tanks full, basic recovery gear, tools, plus me and the dog in the Grenadier. Not a light weight, but not too bad after I did some weight loss by deleting the rear seat and removing my drawers. I'm turning this thing into a trail weapon. Albeit a hefty one.

As for the RTI event, it was a 20deg ramp and I was the 2nd person on after my friend in his dialed-in GX470 on long travel and 35's. We were both there to see if our tires cleared and didn't take exact measurements as there is a Metalcloak CTI event coming up here soon that we will both be at. That's the one I want to capture. This RTI was just more for the fun of it.

Best use of an RTI ramp. They are great at finding about 95% of all clearance issues.

After seeing that awesome Grenadier Porn, I have a somewhat more mundane question regarding the Front Drive Shaft issue. Given the venue I suspect I know the answer, but I would appreciate your opinion nevertheless, particularly to satisfy my skeptical spouse. As a prospective Grenadier owner, is this issue a potential deterrent to purchasing one or is it thought of as a relatively minor annoyance? Thanks.

Not in a slightest bit. Spend extra $1K for a spare factory driveshaft.

So the Grenadier will not drive as rear wheel drive with the front driveshaft removed?
If for some reason your front drive shaft cv fails and you are able to remove it I guess technically you can lock the differential and drive rear wheel drive for a period of time. I'm not sure if that is a recommended strategy for the long haul

Thanks. My rear driveshaft (u joints) grenaded on my Land Cruiser so I removed it, put it in 4 wheel drive and we were able to get around town in front wheel drive to get it fixed. Not desirable, but better than getting towed.

Still seems like the frequency of this problem is not well documented. I see the survey on this forum but don't see anything more comprehensive. Perhaps Ineos has more data but doesn't really want to share.
