Front Drive Shaft Update

Question, out of curiosity, especially for Dokatd and others who know a hell of a lot more than I do. On 80 series landcruisers which are all wheel drive as the grenadier is until you lock center diff then is in 4wd as grenadier is. People do a conversion to part time 4wd. I believe this involves a modification to the transfer case but also to the front hubs. The front driveshaft then does not spin unless you lock it in 4, and you need to twist front hubs so that hubs spin in front w/ 4wd. Would this not be an option on the grenadier?? So basically the front driveshaft is not spinning, especially not when at high speed on hwy ect. You are only in 2wd. But then when you need 4wd you lock center diff, you lock front hubs and power is given. Driveshaft would only see action when going slower and much less of the time when using 4wd. This would prolong life of drive shaft vastly I would think. Comments??

I actually think this is a great option. And the conversion would be relatively easy if the T-case is built anything like the LR LT230. But I'm sure it would be moderately costly and the trucks TC and other electronics might freak out.

Could be viable though.

Good idea. Leaving off the locking hubs might net shift-on-the-fly capability (from 2HI to 4HI) becasuse the front end components will already be spinning at the correct speed but that's what we're trying to avoid here. Otherwise you generally need to incorporate some sort of synchro ring to get shift on the fly capability with the hubs locked ahead of time.
 
I wonder if an Atlas transfer case from a JL with the very similar ZF 8 speed would bolt up to the Grenadier. That would allow for deeper low range gears and the ability to clock the transfer case for optimal driveshaft angles. Would probably get you on 37s with a bigger lift for a fraction of the price of portals.

I don't know the strength of the rear of the ZF transmission. I think there's only five bolts mating it to the Tremec and no adapter of any kind. Is an Atlas heavier or lighter that the Tremec?

Maybe we could swap one of these in?
 
I think changing the tcase on this thing will make the truck freak out like robbie the robot melting down.
 
The category I'm falling into isnt that the boot pinching is ever an issue. It's stretching at the top and fatiguing. I think a deeper bellow with more material would cure it, at least for the non lifted units, and even for the lifted ones where the shaft may have been pushed down too much.

I'm fine if so and I don't have an ego about it, but what makes you dismiss all the evidence of pinching that I have documented. There is a large amount of physical evidence pointing to pinching.

examining my spare, and the location of most of the tears doesn't seem to be in an area that could pinch. They all seem ragged like a fatigues rubber band. I'm not sure what can be done to increase the droop by making that lip a greater diameter, but as far as the rubber goes, its formed with a curve, so it seems a larger bellow that would have more material and less overall opening and closing as the unit rotates, would cut down on the fatigue and maybe less tention on the rubber in the droop. rubber bands don't fail from flexing them back and forth, they fail from stretching.

Just an observation.
