Front Drive Shaft Update

Younger generation know...but they just don't understand.

Epic design failure…
Good thing is I caught this one super early. It's full failed, but I could see the initial failure a bit better since it just tore open. I am very much thinking the boots outer shell is too close. I believe the boot itself might be able to handle the angle, but it's seems some unique position of the axle will allow the shaft to pinch the boot. This is probably exacerbated by running the max caster spec and beyond.

I am going to likely order two new joints and experiment with one of the boot housings.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. Hopefully you can make this point of failure great again.
If not, you'll probably just caster aside and buy a bulletproof Tacoma.

I won't drive a Yota. At least not for long. I like rebuilding them and flipping them but that's about it.
 
Well guys, I got around 7k miles on the Terra joint until the boot tore today.
Sounds about right . I think my 1st Terra CV joint lasted about the same close to 7k miles. I am currently on my 2nd Terra joint that is on a little over 5k miles so far, and this is after my San Juan Mtns trip TX-CO and back. I kept my highways speeds around 65-70mph and pulled a small camper trailer. I tried not to drive longer than 5 hrs each day at these speeds. I checked the FDS each night during my trip just to see if she was holding up. I brought a spare FDS with me just-n-case I needed to swap it out quickly while traveling away from home.

Remind me… do you have a lift?

The front driveshaft angle is a complete fail. Ineos is going to have to engineer a solution. The CV can handle the angle but the $1 boot can’t. They need to address this.
 
Just waking up, long night on the road. The small lift and terra, survived over 15K miles, exploded on the highway towing. Not sure its just the boot. I think what did me in was towing over undulating roads sending it out of spec. Believe me, Ineos is well aware of this disaster, but no solution in site. They relied on Dana for the design and are VERY pissed I assure you. Thankfully removing the shaft and driving in 4 lock gets you down the road. New shaft from Agile on the way.
 
Makes me think that that Wrangler spare joint is not going onto the driveshaft as preventative maintenance...
What makes you say that? Having the Terra joint installed already makes trail swap super quick and easy. You can also apply some lube or maybe even anti seize on the Tcase side so you won't have to worry about a stuck on joint.

Certainly not a priority necessarily, but man if your stock one fails on the road it makes replacement in the field much harder. Maybe more priority if you have any lift.

Have a DeWalt angle grinder and disks to do it in the field - I took your write-up seriously.
 
It would be interesting to see one of those thermal videos of the boots (stock and Terraflex) after 10, 15, 30 minutes of driving on both a stock and lifted Grenadier.

I have ideas like this but not the equipment to actually follow through.

I can tell you the new joints get super hot. They cool a fair bit with miles.

That said, my boot is still supple and more or less feels like new. My recent one had a tear. Contact was made between the boot and the collar most certainly. The boot had to be pinched.

I am still driving on my torn boot but have a new joint coming this week or next. Not being a hypocrite I am driving like normal on my damaged boot without issue. Joint has not started making noise yet.
 
Guys, are there pictures of all this posted? Im not totally familiar with the parts in question.
What exactly should I be checking, and what exactly are folks replacing?
