Forgive me if I’ve misunderstood - there’s a certain ’jazz’ quality to that post. As a former banker I’m accustomed to being called a wanker and must at least entertain the possibility that it’s true. If so I won’t be the first or last to own a Grenadier, it’ll take all types.
Indeed - but financial industry has changed in past 24 months. But I am not aware that a financial guy was ever called a wanker. To often they had their escorts at lunch break. Even this has changed now. And yes .. Grenadier attracts all..

Yeah, and to connect back to Holland / Nederland... New York was New Amsterdam before the British grabbed it from the Dutch. Try explaining that to Gen Z...
Damn! Now you tell me! And here was I thinking New Amsterdam was the hospital in a tv series. 😎
Mind you, Captain Cook apparently thought Sydney was the name of a cabin boy until he discovered Australia! 🥳

On the subject of tattoos we are now in a world where nearly everyone under the age of 40 has them.
I find it difficult to understand.
particularly with criminals who in theory don't want to be easily recognisable, but get covered in tattoos which makes them very easy to identify

I wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alleyway 😬

:ROFLMAO: and probably the founders were Dutch. No, Dutch are not Germans, Dutch are citizens of Nederland. Germans speak "Deutsch". English is a very strange language ;)

By the way, I speak Flemish (and French, both mother tongue, equal level). Flemish is the same as Dutch. I am not French, neither Dutch, I am Belgian. Got it, or too complicated (even for me it is)? :ROFLMAO:
@Jean Mercier Hold your horses. Isn't there a disagreement between the Belgian and the Flemish? similar to Texas and the rest of US. Or Montreal and Canada or Brittany and France

Franconia vs. Bavaria. Baden-Württemberg vs. Schwaben. "Oberdorf" vs. "Unterdorf" (in my village).

Yes, we can have serious conflicts even on the smallest scale. 🥳

In 1984 I was crossing a small border place between Bolivia and Brasil, and after stamping my passport the Brazilian official asked me if I was Walloon or Flemish? I was stunned, and then he asked me "Isn't there a civil war going on there?" :ROFLMAO:
So, to be clear: Belgium, the country, is composed of three linguistic regions with some cultural differences: the North, are the Flemish who speak Dutch (60% of the population), the South are the Walloons who speak French (40%), and in the East a very small population who speak German. I won't tell how we got this last region, otherwise the Germans on this forum could claim this back ;).
All of them are Belgians!
There have always been some struggles, mainly political or economical (as you wish), between the Flemish and the Walloon. There have also been sometimes quarrels between my deceased father, a Walloon and my mother, she was Flemish.
That's why I buy a Grenadier, to be able to flee the country through the fields when that "civil war" starts again :ROFLMAO:

Everybody makes fun of cycling but I learned more about European history by listening to Phil Ligget and Paul Sherman giving color commentary during races than I did in school

Thanks a lot :ROFLMAO: or are you saying that you didn't understand my explanation ;)

And, there are two "Luxembourg" on the map, one is a Belgian province (blue color), the other is an independent small country.
I understood what you wrote, and I'm familiar with the basic linguistic divisions of Belgium. Just thought I'd add a map. Maps are good :)

The Belgians (Walloons?) and the French also have a very special relationship.

Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis / Welcome To The Sticks!

Absolutely recommend watching. :)(y)

Is that really "welcome to the sticks" in English ? Film is great, best in French, but Ch´tis has nothing to do with sticks. Its taking the mickey out of the people in the region of Calais, where they speak with an accentuated Ch´ti..which sounds rather funny to ze people from the rest of France. Denny Boon is great director, there is more of his stuff that is worth seeing..in French if you can, makes quite a difference.

Enjoy !
Frank

Hm .. I used Oostende as a ferryport for a long time.. - And I possess (inherited) an old FN 1900 Herstal (121 years old) in my collection.
.. and tried some of Trappist beers when I worked for the EIB in Luxembourg, Auchan sells these.. not Leffe.. there are a bunch of others .. and there is pink elephant..
Belgie is fun. Sometimes my head felt twice the size.. - then.. long ago.

Perhaps I will travel though when going next time to UK by IG.. - to ferry that is shipping us to Hull.

You are completely right, "Chti" has nothing to do with sticks, it's a nickname for the people of the region.

.. and there is pink elephant..

The only thing I know for sure is the German title "Willkommen bei den Sch’tis". Found the other titles at the english Wikipedia.

Where I was wrong in my posting above is the Belgian/French "conflict". That's from another Dany Boon movie: "Nichts zu verzollen" / "Rien à déclarer" / "Nothing to declare" which is so to say of the same make and similarly recommendable.
