AO now offers Jumper Cables with 50 mm² NATO Plug

What’s the point of this? Eagerly jump starting other vehicles, via the NATO plug? Then you need another set of cables to jump start the grenadier?

I just keep a GooLoo GT4000S box charged in the car. It has plenty juice to jump start anything many times over, I can charge it in the car while driving if needed, it holds charge for a very long time, and it’s small and stores easily in the car. What advantage do cables have over a nice jump box these days? Safer, smaller, lighter….🤷🤷🤷

Somebody made a good point in another thread about this subject that the NATO socket is only 350A - not a lot of boost for jumping another vehicle

I think you guys are totally overlooking how cool it would be to, leave the hood closed, whip this thing out, and tell people it is a NATO plug and jump their dead vehicle….

In the video, he covers how he has female NATO plug with clamps so you can have a set of clamp-to-clamp standard cables. I really haven’t looked, but he shows the standard clamp posts under hood and those seem pretty easy to use.

But you don’t get to say “NATO plug”…

ETA: it is kind of interesting that a good set of jumper cables is about as much as one of those rechargers…

yep 100% cool factor, for the most part it's totally worthless.
I explain how worthless it is in the video. I'm a retired mechanic, I just repurposed my obscenely over priced Snap On jumper cables and got to fiddle around with my 3D printer and Fusion to design the plug.
The female plug I built is to jump my own truck if needed I hope I never have to use it.
be sure to leave a like and make a comment, even if it's negative, the Youtube algorithm doesn't know the difference between good and bad comments ;)

It's totally for the cool factor

yeah, it is cool, just like using the winch to pull some dimwit in a CRV buried up to the rockers out of the sand.
when the cables were installed in my other trucks I used them often back in the day, but admittedly I don't use them very often now days.
you have to admit it's cool....
looking cool is hard work, and it only took me a day or two to design and print the plug the bigger issue is the cables take up a lot of space in my spare tire tool box.
as for the jump packs, I cover that, in the video, I have literally blown up two of the small LiOn ones trying to jump fully dead vehicles. I was an early adopter of them, and gave up after the second one popped

It's only NATO. It's not pulling its weight according to Al Zheimer.

Oh I understand it’s for cool factor. I’m wondering if there is ever a real-use advantage to cables over a good box these days. Are cables a thing of the past?
For me it's a toss up. I have had many boxes, and in my professional opinion it is a much better option, than cables.
I mention it in the video but, I have had several boxes die, or in the case of the smaller LiOn ones explode under a heavy load. The cables never go bad, they just take up space.
being the "prepare" nut that I am if I had the space I would carry a box and the cables, which I did in my old Dakota.
You can always run a car off the box, if the battery in the dead vehicle is totally fried you can just leave the box attached and use it as the vehicle battery to get somewhere better than were you are.
but I have a quartermaster, space is limited, and I have filled every open space with "stuff"
I just got my Quartermaster last week so I am still finding places to put stuff. for the time being the cables won.

I’m kind of of amazed that car manufacturers haven’t gone to some kind of universal plug for jumping a dead battery. Maybe most people call a service or use one of the new battery pack (thinking more service than battery). Between potentially frying electronics and other bad stuff, Just surprised that they have dumbed it down.

ETA: I thought the NATO plug was some kind of next level power source, like strong enough to jump start a M1A1 tank or at least a jet.
