What did you do with your Grenadier today?

Long drive today, (for the UK!), Melton Mowbray to Colchester, to Dover Cruise Terminal to Melton Mowbray, 424 miles, 0525 to 1600 with two 35 minute breaks while driving and two lots of 20 minutes either loading or unloading wife and mother, with their luggage, (neither has the hang of travelling light).

Grenadier has done it without complaint and still has an estimated range of 90 miles, so about 26mpg, at or close to the speed limits, (so varying between 30 and 70mph, with bits at 40 and 50 where limits were varied for congestion or roadworks).

I have to do much the same on Sunday, with a much earlier start, as they need picking up from Dover at 0755!

Drove to the top of Mt Washington yesterday. Gorgeous up there at a nice 62 F while the rest of NH was in the upper 80’s to low 90’s

Side note the altimeter was close to being accurate up there. Off by less than 10 feet.

no they are not, they are mandrel-drawn and bent steel tubing. apparently can take a rock directly off roading and protect the truck..

Liberty the Grenadier is with Compass in Bridgewater for fitting of auxiliary petrol tank. 90L from LRA Australia also fit Ineos OEM black marked springs and fit airbagman air bags in rear springs and modify exhaust to accommodate new tank. All going well so far. They seem like a very competent outfit with great communication

I'd like to hear your feedback on the LRA tank plus blacks plus airbags combo. I have the airbags going in on 14th August and will do the LRA tank later. I'm avoiding a spring change at this stage but I'm getting my rig plus camper weighed at trip weight in early September and that will determine what else I need to do.

Before I took my Grenadier “Liberty” for the works to upgrade springs, fit auxiliary fuel tank and exhaust mods, I took all my underbody protection plates off as this was something I can do to save costs on the mods . I also wanted to get diff and transfer box oils changed as I had them changed in the early days at approx 8k miles in Botswana. All guards came off easily apart from the front diff guard, which had one rounded out Allen key bolt. This I easily sorted by drilling out the bolt then hammering a flat impact driver screwdriver bit into the drilled out hole then turning it out with a spanner. After taking the guards off I noticed an oil weep around the gearbox, damage to the transfer box Bowden cables and crushing to the heat shielding in that general area. All damage that had been caused when my prop shaft failed last August 2024. Whilst the vehicle was in for modification works at Compass in Bridgewater I asked them to investigate the leak and damage. It turns out there are are small cracks where the plastic gearbox pan is bolted to the aluminium casting of the gearbox. Caused by the flailing prop but not identified during the initial repairs. I had put underbody protection plates on the week after I got into back from repairs from prop shaft damage as I was concerned about the plastic gearbox pan. Anyway I relayed all my photo evidence of initial damage and observations to Ineos via Compass the dealer. I now have to have a complete new gearbox as can’t be repaired. This will be done under warranty as agreed by Ineos. Could be a while waiting for a new gearbox and getting it fitted though. Also noted was a leaking seal on one of the rear wheel hubs. Again being fixed under warranty along with new transfer box cables.
Well done Ineos for honouring my warranty. A sigh of relief from me as this will be costly repair I guess..
Photos attached show damage to original prop where it had been flailing around plus crack to gearbox case through the impact plus the hub seal leak and the guards I fitted to mitigate damage in the future.
Now unfortunately the long wait to get it fixed. Compass are doing all they can to expedite the repairs and have been thorough and communicative during the process, so a call out to them and everyone at Ineos who has been dealing with my case. Im getting to be well known at Ineos I guess with the various issues I’ve had

Drove the Piva canyon yesterday on the way from Sarajevo to Montenegro. Absolutely stunning drive. I’m tempted to do it again but Durmitor national park beckons.

Also notice lucky escape with the RTT on the trailer!! Bosnia’s rough roads took their toll. All fixed now.

Yeah he says later in the YT not to do it but he was doing some testing for Opus Campers and thought he'd give it a crack. He mostly got away with it but it did some damage. His buddy almost flipped his rig on another drop in. Real pucker stuff.

Hi @Tom D how are you getting on with that Flatdog roof rack on your trailer and was that the cause of the failure ? I had a flat dog roof rack I my defender and I found those extrusions very weak. I had the fixings that were holding my tent and spare wheel tear out of the roof slots at one point.
Glad to see you managed to catch before any major damage.

What happened? Forgot to fix or brocken screws while braking the Grenny.

The bolts had worked loose enough to allow the whole thing to slide forward on the rails. It’s added to the daily checklist now.

Got mine in for some warranty items.

Spare wheel hanger replaced due to corrosion.

Rear door trims replaced due to warping.

Windscreen cowl grommets replaced.

Checked over for water trickle possible a/c condensation in passenger footwell floor (only rarely now in high heat and humid days) and awaiting update once Ineos send advice and parts.

All pretty minor stuff (other than spare wheel carrier which brought back memories of loose Land Rover spare wheels fallen off back doors up at the Cape York tracks). Nice to have these all replaced under warranty without fuss or delay.
