Use cases for roof power points?

I ran my UHF radio's co-ax through the forward driver's side power grommet. Using the DVA Mechanics cable to power a Starling Mini out of the same location. Haven't decided if I'm going to re-route the weBoost antenna co-ax through the rear driver's side grommet (currently just routed through the small back door).
do you have any photos of how you opened up that area for the coax? I'm installing my GMRS radio also. Did you have to cut and re-crimp the connector at the end to get it through the hole?

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures (sorry). You start by removing the lash bar and associated mounts - the black plastic panel behind the bar pulls off at that point. Behind it are several holes, one of which the power from the factory plug uses (if equipped). I ran a very small diameter coax cable through that rubber grommet, but it's too tight where the grommet narrows (think of a funnel), so where that happens I cut a tiny slit through which I was able to push the Co-ax through (with some silicone to help). Once through it was just a matter of fishing it BEHIND the air-bag and then down the b-pillar (3 pieces to remove - Ineos' instructions are here somewhere on the forum). The thin co-ax line was only 6-feet long, so about 2/3 of the way down the b-pillar I connected it to a standard co-ax cable which then ran into the battery box where I had the radio (head unit is mounted on the dash). You could also run it from the b-pillar to under the driver's seat if that's where you want to put your radio.
 
You definitely could use co-ax without the connector and crimp it on when done, but I knew I wasn't going to be doing a lot of work with co-ax after that, so didn't want to invest in the tools & know-how to do that.

What did you end up using for an antenna? my GMRS has a large magnetic base with an NMO antenna adapter...been reading about the importance of a ground plane of metal beneath the antenna. The alternative being a clamp on the lash bar which surrenders the ground plane. The other thought is mounting it on/around the hood area but then there is an obstruction issue with the cab so I am leaning toward the center of the roof.

I ran it through the aux and used the lashing tube with a Midland Ghost antenna setup. It worked great. And when not in use, I unscrew the Ghost antenna and carry it on my truck.

There are HAM antennas designed for use without a ground plane, so I chose one of those (Comet SBB2). I attached mine to the lash bar using a folding Diamond mount for that type of installation. I set it up at the forward lash bar so if I'm heading into low overhead obstacles, it's a quick hop out of the truck to lower that antenna as well as the weBoost at the back of the roof rack. I have only ever used handheld GMRS radios, so can't advise specifically about those types of antennas.
 
I have both roof ports free right now, but I will be fitting camp lights and flashing beacons for work. So that will use up both ports. I got the laser Sentinel kit to replace the driving lights so no need for a light bar. I will maybe put some sort of splitter in to power lights in an RTT.

nice clamp! Is that the MicroMobile mount for the Midland ghost? Looks clean, though I would have to get a new coax as the one that came with my MXT575 is hardwired to the magnetic base. Thanks for the help

Thanks Nadir5 for the Comet SBB2 recommendation...might be a good NMO option for when I would like a bit more reach, easy swap with the Ghost.

Yes it's the micro mobile mount and yes a different cable.

No need to sweat about ground plane for UHF (GMRS) radios. Even VHF works ok without. It starts to be a problem at lower frequencies (HF) like CB band and below.
Grenadier roofs make poor HF ground planes, I had to run a small wire from the coax shield to the nearest screw going to the chassis and it works just great.
 
It looks like those lazer lights come pre-wired with Deutsch connectors which is great. From the tech specs it looks like the floods are either 20cm or 28cm long wires from the light, which isn't long enough to make it to the hard-wired plug. Did you splice in cable for yours to lengthen it?

Yes if I remember correctly they came with the wrong deutsch plugs anyway. I had planned on making a patch cable but didn’t have the correct fitting to match what was on the light so I cut the plug off and made an extension piece. It would have been neater to order the right plug to be honest but it’s worked so far 😆
