NRMA has a lower amount (I had up to AUD3,000), but the main supplier is Club4X4. You can add recovery cover to your policy, like 10,000 or 15,000 etc. Premium varies depends on the amount chosen. You add it during a policy year, but it stays there for that policy year. It can come off the next policy year, if you wish.

Plus their policy covers you off gazetted roads, many polices do not. It is easy to go off a gazetted road when remote, real easy.

I cannot use NRMA with the IG, because they set a max GVM weight of 3500kg, and we are 3550kg,

But trip prep and prevention is my preferred option.
 
Club 4x4 has it but read the fine print. You pay for the recovery they reimburse you after the event. RACQ RACV breakdown etc will do break down recoveries but their fine print is also pretty specific.

I realised last week that the two years complimentary roadside assistance from IA expired on 23 July :oops:. Without getting into speciality comprehensive insurances, the highest roadside cover in Qld is RACQ Ultimate. It's a general purpose assistance plan but covers the majority of events I might use. It includes vehicles up to 4500kg GVM, bogged vehicles, lockouts, fuel and batteries plus caravan/trailer towing. RACQ has reciprocal arrangements in other states. The first obvious constraint is a 100km limit on towing. Presumably you could make a financial arrangement with the service provider if you needed to go further.

Welcome to remote travel, one reason I have some form of recovery insurance.

I do vary the level depending how remote I am.
No such cover available for Africa I’m aware of and non for For Europe outside the EU such as the Balkans I’m aware of. From my research I dodnt think there is any cover for foreign vehicles through Central Asia also. Maybe @globalgregors can enlighten us on any such cover for foreign vehicles in the Americas.

No recovery cover along the precise lines discussed here that I’m aware of.

We haven’t looked at this in a while, but there used to be insurance for vehicles travelling internationally available from Alessie, Clements, and TourInsure. These examples are distinct variations on a theme, there could be that some level of recovery is included.

Most often though realistically you’re carrying the risk of everything up to and including the total loss of your vehicle.

A generic vehicle warranty is also unlikely to cover operation outside the delivery market.

I’m not sure how Ineos arrangements vary by jurisdiction however at a minimum one should presume that roadside assistance/recovery provisions will not apply.

Exactly. I need to clarify that I did check tour insure for my Southern African trip but not sure if they would cover remote breakdowns as I didn’t explore more. At £10k + for a six month tour I decided I’ll take the risk and take the hit if I had to. Claiming from insurance companies whilst thousands of miles away In another country is notoriously difficult also. I insured our Hilux around 2010 for shipping to Mozambique, during shipping the ratchet straps broke and the vehicle rattled around in a container for a few weeks, damaging the front end and creasing the bonnet. I had absolutely no luck whatsoever in making a claim for damages. Had I been in the U.K. I could have knocked on the insurers door but no luck when so far away.

Oh dear, and maritime insurance is usually pretty good. Not sure what you do after that experience but we retain the vehicle with screwed-down chocks for long passages.

I just roughly added up what I have spent on insurance in the last 40 years (pet, home, travel, breakdown, etc not car) at today's prices.

I stopped counting at £50k. Not a single claim, I should have put the money in a savings account.

Add income protection, life, professional indemnity etc and it really makes one feel ripped off.

I had the exact same experience. Shipped a couple of classic motorcycles from Europe to California and both got damaged in the crate, looked like something heavy dropped into the crate from above and damaged them severely.

Had insurance, got nothing from them after making claims etc. The insurance was done with the European freight company but being on the other side of the world despite being in California made it impossible to really get it done. Was just given the cold shoulder and couldn't really take them to court, not that I think the claim was big enough for that.
