Real Names on Profile.

I don’t do social media anymore but when I did, I used my full name and never had problems. But, in my opinion, using your real name on a forum isn’t apples to apples. When I was doing social media, I never had substantial or lengthy discussions with someone who commented on a post. In other words, I never encountered a conversation that was out of line.

Whereas on a forum - oh boyyyyy, I’ve seen things get WAY out of line - emotional, egotistical, angry, vengeful, manipulative, fanning the flames, name calling, epic tantrums etcetera. So it’s a different kind of risk posting your real name on a forum which will always be vulnerable to heated convos. But I’m not totally against using full names.

As far as discussing politics - there are plenty of people who can have calm and positive discussions even if their ideologies are polar. However, if you view one side as crazy zealots who are out to get you - good luck with that conversation bc it was over before it started in that case!

I try to be respectful in what I say, and most things are tongue in cheek directed at my own deficiency. I would never want my name shown on anything on the Internet, I don't like people posting pictures that include me.
I don't do any of the other Internet stuff as I do not wish to be known in that way.
I don't go round with a tinfoil hat on but I do kind of feel like that. Happy to meet up in person but names and any identifying marks, as in registration plates on vehicles should, in my opinion, be blurred out unless consent is given. I find the 'Grenadier spotted' section should require this as we have no idea who it is or their choice.

I am the same way about the picture thing! I think most people feel it’s normal to assume that no one minds if they post your picture on the internet. For example, if someone takes a group picture during a social event - they’ll post it on social media without a second thought! So strange really.

I once had a student (my first year) whose name was - and I swear hand on heart she was a real middle school student - named Unique Cherry. When I got my attendance lists before the semester began I thought someone was messing with the new guy. Nope. Actual kid, actual name.
