Power steering noise

Hello everyone;) I was finally able to pick up my grenadier yesterday🥳 Unfortunately, I noticed at home that my power steering makes a strange noise. I think it's not a normal noise, or? The filling level in the container was at maximum with the engine warm but switched off. The German instructions do not say exactly in which condition the oil should be checked. Does anyone have an idea? I tried to post a video but I always see the file is too big (7mb)
Thank you;)

As a calibration exercise...is this what other owners that have the condition are hearing? Do I win a prize for the squealiest PSP?
God that is loud compounded by echoing inside the garage.

Test, do the same someone inside rocking the steering to activate the noise and put your finger over the pin hole (vent hole) on the side of the cap. See if the noise changes. I want to know if pressurised air is making the noise out of the hole.

I'd like to read that spec to see how it is stated. I'd expect something like " PSP noise levels up to 75dB when measured with engine idling while rotating steering wheel using a calibrated sound pressure meter held two feet from the PS reservoir" or something quantifiable like that. Otherwise this becomes a battle of subjective calls from folks with various hearing health and maybe some motivation to fix or not.

Anyone know what that spec is so we know what "good" is? I assume its in the dealer service manual someplace?

Will do! And will roll it out doors to eliminate any echo off garage walls.

Also when I put my ear near the res, the whistle sound more like its coming from someplace below that level add back toward the firewall on the R/H side.

No change...see attached. Also, when I put my ear closer to the area, the noise seems to be coming from below and back a bit toward the firewall on the R/H side, Not from the reservoir or the cap. I do really appreciate the constructive help here BTW.. This vid was out in the open, not in an enclosed garage. Guess its back to the shop...

Mine does not make any noise at full-lock in either direction, and noise stops 5 seconds after any steering imput. The pitch changes with steering input pressure up to full lock (then no sound).

My fluid level was already at max cold. There was evidence of over-flow, but it was also just at the dealership for 1 year service and to check PS noise so they may have spilled some.

I lifted the wheels off the ground and did 60 full-lock-to-lock sweeps to try to clear and air. No change.

Sigh...that's what I'm talkin' bout. That is what it should do! So there is hope. I can barely hear the whistle but it is MUCH quieter than mine and about matched the three I listened to at the dealer earlier today.

I appreciate the investigative work people are doing here as it's beyond me. I also get the steering whine (to an embarrassing level).

The only other steering related issue I have and i'm unsure if it's related but will mention - does anyone else get feedback through their steering when stopped? Like a gentle kick/rotation of the steering wheel like the power steering is trying to assist or activate even though you're not providing any input?

Normal
My DILs 2002 Benz also does it.
Modern systems eh!

Isn't this artifacts of the recirculating ball feedback ?

Can't say I have ever noticed it on the vehicles with recirculating ball steering systems I drive daily. Might be an idiosyncrasy with electric hydraulic power steering systems when the electronics detects a steering demand from the steering position sensor and ramps up the pump.

The electric pump seems like a neat idea that isn't great in practice. I am going to sound like a cave man, but someone should make a conversion kit with an engine belt driven pump to feed the recirculating ball steering box. I'd gladly sacrifice a few HP to parasitic loss for a quiet and reliable pump.

My 1994 80 series Land Cruiser has a gear driven pump (and a recirculating ball steering box) that is bombproof, and serviceable (it has over 300k trouble free miles on the OEM seals, and I can still order a rebuild kit from any Toyota dealer around the globe - on a 30 year old vehicle).
