Petrol or diesel ? Thanks for your help

Hello guys

I am vincent from france and we are lucky to be able to buy either the b57 or the b58 at the same price.

In my country diesel costs a little bit less than petrol to inform you.

I will drive around 6000 miles a year with my grenadier, only week end and holidays for roadtripping. So sometimes i will not drive it at all for one or two weeks..

So my ask is : for the best longevity of the motor and the least mainenance worries, which is the best version for me ?

Based on your expected use I would suggest petrol is a better fit for you.

I’ve got the petrol version and from what I can read, both the petrol and the diesel versions are pretty robust and long lasting if properly maintained . I have a mate who works for the BMW training college in the UK and he reckons the B58 engine is bulletproof.
 
Many thanks, i thought taking the b58 but was a little afraid by the poor fuel economy, more for the range than the cost…

Diesel is more complex, 2 turbos, filters, dpf/ad blue etc
Not sure the savings in fuel difference would pay off.
I'm happy with petrol in a hilly island where I sometimes tow a 2.5T van.
 
if you can get the vehicle to do proper DPF re-gens, then the diesels my preferred for the extra torque if loaded up and fuel economy. But as Tazzie says there a bit more complex and the extra adblue

Sorry but what is DPF regens ?
 
A DPF burn, also known as regeneration, is a process that cleans a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) by burning off trapped soot and particulate matter. This process is crucial for maintaining engine performance and preventing damage to the DPF, which is designed to reduce emissions from diesel engines. DPF burns can occur automatically during normal driving or may be triggered by the vehicle's engine management system when the DPF reaches a certain level of saturation
 
I would still go for the diesel.

Ok, less power, more complicated control systems and a bit more noise and vibration, but on the plus side circa 150km increased range, more torque and a few hundred € cheaper to run.

Oh right ! I could drive it to commute my 30 miles once a week to do that on the highway if it matters

Yeah that’s what i am thinking too. My defender is diesel, my campervan is diesel, it is not a problem for me. But the fuel consumption for 100 km seems to be 12L for the diesel and 17 for the petrol which is mind blowing !

In fact i will pay the maintenance but my fuel is paid by my company, so could be a good idea
 
I have a Petrol nice to have the extra power I don't tow heavy trailers still get over 24MPG if you keep the speed at such a level that the drag doesn't take over.Also no trouble from the complex amble systems .
