Owl Vans Grenadier Steering Box Upgrade

Not true mine would squeal sitting still idling….
Mine makes some noise only when I steer and it’s not loud. I initially took it as a Grenadier thing at first to only find out the majority here are annoyed by it. Not all pumps are made the same it seems.

lol that’s messed up… you mean it never idles down after like 5 seconds of steering inactivity?

Sitting still, steering straight ahead, it would be silent, and then the pump would come on sporadically. If the wheel was turned more than an 1/8 it would squeal sitting still. In general use, you could hear me coming from a couple of hundred yards away.

A Jeep JL wrangler has a similar set up and it makes a noise. It isn’t as loud or as frequent.

If this fixes the steering whine, it will fix most of my whining about the IG. I have to think that it doesn't otherwise I'd think that would be the first sentence and major sell. But if it doesn't fix the whine, I'm thinking nothing will.... Not a steering box?
Based on the information they have on the specs, fixes the whine.

Well, folks, we have our answer on the steering pump noise. But you will have to watch to find out ;)

It’s amazing… owl can evidently spec the build of these steering pumps, without explicit requirements on noise thresholds. Even with such ambiguity on noise requirements, the supplier naturally built them in a way that doesn’t generate noise. Makes sense right? It’s like spec-ing the requirements for an order of balls, without the need to be pedantic and specify the mathematical formula of a sphere.

Ineos (and us) has the poor luck with being saddled with a dipshit supplier that took the path that results in 90db+ of shriek in many units 😭😭😂😂😂.

You almost have to explicitly try hard, to create a steering pumps that generates that much noise and then also ignore the noise while doing qc testing.

I'm encouraged. I'll want to see a few more, and have a known loud one next to one of these, inside a garage. I don't think it will be silent- the Jeep isn't silent; it just doesn't sound like there is a turbine engine in there.

I'll probably wait until spring, since I have the windows up mostly. Also hoping that some kind of deal is worked out. That Ineos just cut people doesn't make me think that they are going to do a $2K+ mod. To me the question is if they are going to use this design going forward... awkward.

Oh, and thanks OWL for taking this on!

I ordered one for my quartermaster a couple weeks ago and will be installing it at their Portland facility next month. I’ll let everyone know how it turns out.

I am likely to spring for this and have it installed in Portland. I am not bothered by the stock steering, but I do a lot of high-speed highway driving, and I imagine it would be much more enjoyable with this installed.
