Letter to Lynne Calder

and yet, that still should not happen.

Especially with a second battery trickling the first one.

Having said that, I have no idea if it was left locked or unlocked, how often they opened the doors, or anything.

Still. In the context of this thread, it needed a new alternator and one arrived within 48h of ordering it. That’s pretty good.

In the context of the vehicle it’s not pretty good it’s a miracle, praised he Lord brother

Oh I dunno, I’ve written elsewhere on here about my experience after an accident. Identifying the parts required was a disorganised chaotic nightmare for a third party but once the parts were correctly identified nothing took over a week to arrive from the time of ordering.

Front Wing
Headlight
Inner arch
Outer arch extension
Various bits of plastic bumper

Was forkin expensive but at least they arrived quickly.

Whilst the alternator arrived in a couple of days it took 3 weeks to get a new battery. Weird.

ChatGPT says:

An alternator is designed to maintain a charged battery, not recharge a deeply discharged one. If the battery is significantly depleted, the alternator has to work much harder to bring it back up to charge, and this can lead to:
1. Overheating – The alternator generates more current than normal, producing excess heat, which can damage internal components like the diodes and voltage regulator.
2. Premature wear – The added strain can shorten the lifespan of the alternator bearings and other moving parts.
3. Voltage spikes – If the voltage regulator is stressed, it may cause unstable charging, potentially damaging electrical components.
To me as an electrical engineer answers like this one really show what level that whole A"I" thing has if it comes to problems a bit more complex than e.g. "How can I make my coffee taste sweeter?"

DId a quick google search to figure out what the alternator is on these. Appears the alternator on the Ineos is the same one that's used on a lot of BMWs, so it probably had a good head start on being established in replacement part distribution and inventory.

In them olden days alternators were simpy not powerful enough to bulk charge a dead battery. I'd like to think that the alternator spec'd for the IA dual battery system is robust enough to occasionally deal with that situation. You pprobably just got a bad one but it is something to consider for those traveling remote.

The parts bin in Hambach (or wherever it is in the UK/EU) is a long way from NA or AUS. I'm not seeing that kind of parts availability in the US. More like 4-6+ weeks for things I've ordered unless popular - like a driver's side A pillar grab handle, etc.

Perhaps if contacting IA you could ask if we could have a rational, repeatable, and controllable way to play MP3 tracks on USB in a manageable order, perhaps alphnumerically by title, or even something as wild as in the order of the track numbers? It really isn't possible to do this at present, and the unpredictable randomness is tiresome. On a vehicle as expensive as the Grenadier, it really is poor that the only way to play an album with tracks in the right (or even a predictable) order is to do it from a smartphone.

That’s an interesting point, I suspect you are in a very small minority of users wanting such a thing but you’d hope it would be a reasonably simple software update.

I have sn old Apple pod thing that doesn't seem to work with the Ineos

I was just going to suggest you might be able to get an old iPhone or something that wouldn’t cost much that might work.

But maybe not!

The entire "radio" is random in operation and you want a discontinued product from the turn of the century to work smoothly. At some level everyone here that bought a truck is a dreamer, but brother, you need help.

I really don't get how the radio works, did nobody bother to try it when they did all the tests. There is no way to easily pick a station without randomly scrolling which then seems skip back and too just to wind you up further. I don't know how many DAB stations there are but we only have 1 lot of 5 to store. It is the worst radio by far. I'm guessing Jim being a traditionalist only tuned into BBC radio 4 and world service so never realised that any more were available therefore having 5 available presets seemed quite excessive and modern.

The radio station storage/presets is alien. I still don’t know how it works, or why it displays the same station data for different stations, or says two numerically different stations are duplicates?! Did I say station data? Sorry, that too is a misnomer. It seems like the software engineer didn’t even know what radio is.

My radio is delightfully quirky - when I am listening to Radio 4 the screen tells me that I am listening to Womans Hour on Radio 2. Go figure that one out.

of all things, you would have thought the radio would be the easiest
