Hi all, just a quick share FYI.

I had a full roof, front runner slim line II fitted. It’s a high standing rack which I wanted to clear the head board of the Norweld tray.

Whilst I didn’t like the cross bar arrangement that much, I figured it would be well tested and it came with a small under bar wind deflector.

Long story short- immediately I noticed harsh heavy vibrations starting in roof and flowing through entire vehicle. Mounting a go-pro of the roof confirmed the issue with a lot of deflection on all cross bars.

A bit of back and forth with front runner AU (requiring the above video evidence) and they have supplied FOC a truss support that runs lengthways effectively bracing each cross bar. Photo shows test fit above bars, but it needs to be moved below longterm else it affects rack capacity/configuration. A pain to fit once rack is on car.

Now, the brace stops 95% of the issues, its only masking the poor wind flow issues and some wind noise and no doubt efficiency losses are present still.

There is a wind deflector fairing made by front runner which I would love to fit, but I have been informed none of the models fit the Gren. I am going to take some measurements myself to consider options….

So, in short. The high front runner rack with cross bars configuration is prone to wind flow issues, and at a minimum needs the additional brace which is not supplied or advertised (was supplied FOC after the follow up). However, I think it should have a deflector fairing made for optimal use.

Hope this helps others!

You have to have the wind deflector. We had an FJ Cruiser with a Front Runner rack and I didn't put the deflector on initially. We went on a 2000 km road trip and the noise was insane, a bit like a Boeing on take off. I used a whole roll of duct tape and taped up all the openings but made no difference. Put the wind deflectors on after the trip and quite as a mouse.
The rack is supposed to have the wind deflector

The Front Runner rack is also about 100mm wider than some of the other racks so this could contribute to the deflection of the roof bars.

I put the wind deflector on my 3/4 rack and it made no difference.
But maybe a full rack would be different.
