Would love to have a fuel heater in the Grenadier. I have one in my D4 and it's excellent in the winter months. Apart fm de-icing the windows and warming the interior I'm certain makes life easier for the engine. Anyone had a Webasto or Eberspacer fitted retro and if so any views/costs?

I have a Webasto in my old Defender and the motor likes to be warmed before driving away. The driver too. ?

It was fitted 16 years ago, 10 years after purchase and still works. Costs were 2k€ incl. installation.

Thank you Karl, that's most helpful.

I'm taking the Webasto out of my Defender to put into the Ineos, it makes cold morning easier to live with.
Not sure if there will be any compatibility problem with the factory alarm

OK chaps now the Greny has arrived has anyone fitted a auxiliary heater or where can i find a wiring diagram (workshop manual) ??
Thanks

Good question. While we await the answers can you spot any logical place to situate it under the bonnet?

If I remember correctly one of the German dealers was talking about their plans to offer an auxiliary heater for the grenadier. Not sure I read it here in the forum or if it was mentioned during my test drive at a dealer close to Lindau.

We 've had already plenty of discussion on the topic of auxiliary heaters. Need to verify which thread this was..
I had one in my previous car a Webasto diesel heater (heating the cooling water and both engine and cabin.. (That was factory fitted in the MB GLK 250 CDI 4matic)
However - I was disappointed as the battery did non provide sufficient power to allow complete warm up or even after a while - the heater failed to start because of "insufficient battery power" - so - the battery control - need to provide sufficient remaining power to start engine.
One of the main reasons I ordered dual battery and the wiring option to allow again the installation of a diesel water heater - and now with sufficient battery for certain.
If it will be a webasto or a eberspächer or something else - I don't know. I looked at the availability of options for Grenadier .. but I want a water heater not an airheater only. Perhaps I discuss this with a Bosch service licensed to service the Grenadier - some of these know about aux heaters and a reasonable price for both the heater and the cost of installation. And the installation position must not have negative side effects to vehicles capabilities.

Black sheep has a solution to build in the autotherm heater in the compartment on the left side of the boot.

I saw that, prefer to keep it out of the boot and under the bonnet if at all possible. Quite like that cubby hole in the boot and likely I'll end up covering the vents up with loads of gear/stuff.

I am not sure of this solution neither. at my defender I built it under the cubby box. But that has been more or less a no brainer as I only had to exchange one sheet of metal with the construction base for the Autotherm.
Now it would be nice to use the existing hoses for the climate control. but those might be closed when the motor is switched off.
Any suggestions?

i have had a quick look and it looks jolly full in there, but there seems to be an area to the left of the engine, as i remember under the red covered jump start connector. i will have to wait until on a ramp to have a proper look.
I had a look at the Black sheep one but it doesn't heat the engine block and that is where the jack is located.

Do the modern BMW engines not have relatively sophisticated warm up strategies and as such negate many of the benefits of a separate heater?

BMW use electric support heater during warmup of engine. however This is by no means the same as a fuel powered auxiliary heater
But most of the modern diesel engines are so efficient that it takes some time to produce enough heat for heating the cabin. So a small heater is built in which is easy converted in a parking heater.
If this is electric in the bmw it can’t be used. But if it is diesel powered like in the 2.0 litre engines of Volkswagen it can be done!

The reasoning behind it is at 3am and -4/5 i can heat the interior and defrost the windows before i get in to drive, also the engine block will be warm so the oil will reach optimum temp quicker reducing potential wear and tear.
and i'm a woos and don't like the cold :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

You do not need to justify the reasons. - In your case however - if it is at home and a suitable wall outlet - you may choose the other option like in Scandinavia - there are electric engine heaters..
Webasto Heater eHeater
The Link directs you to the e Heater too. - so just wall plugged. The comfortable solution if possible works indoor (no emission and risk) and out door if a outdoor wallplug is available.

However this is not a solution for me - When Grenadier is in the night somewhere parked in the forest while I am on the high hide.. I need a solution that doesn't need a wall plug.

Has anyone already made or even realised more concrete plans for the installation of an aux heater? I know the weather doesn’t currently ask for it but I think this will be one of the first things I will do and I am still not sure about the details as to which one and where to put it. I don’t lile the BSI solution too much since it takes up so much of the already limited storage space.
