Engine Failure

There is a lot to be concerned about here. As someone that has been down for over a month at the shop, it hits home. Rear diff locker issue and non covered driveshaft issue.

1. Towing 100 miles is completely absurd, it should be maybe 500miles given the dealer network and maybe a discount for further.
2. An engine is not 65,000.00 in parts, hell a full blown and built new BN58 is 15K all over the internet, other options much cheaper.
3. Hiding what the environmental factor is, that is terrible. We are seeing a lot of duck and cover, and similar with software access or dealing with the front drive shaft disaster.
4. That 3rd party call center is a train wreck. I had trouble communicating with them, but since it would have been a 2500.00 tow bill I of course gave up.

If Ineos told the world this was the result of exceeding maximum wading depth (watch the videos, note that this vehicle with no RAI is notably absent in the water crossings) the owner would not be warrantable and would likely also have his insurance claim denied.

He is getting his car back fixed.

I suspect INEOS did the owner a big favour, but they will get grief instead.

Sure did not look like much. If its that easy to ingest water, I would have done it. I have had water over the hood. That being said, clarity on what went wrong stops the rumor mill.

I reckon your RAI makes a difference. Point made though as it applies with the driveshaft issues.

Nice part of the world down your way, love that dry country. I remember doing a track nearby Albuquerque but I can’t recall the name… Rio Puerto is it? Are there some good trails in the area, other Gren owners nearby?

I watched in disbelief , listening to the two of them bleating on about the treatment received from Ineos. ( watch the recording of their full trip) No manufacturer should be expected to provide warranty cover for that level of extreme use. If you want to take that level of risk, have the common sense to understand you may have to deal with the consequences!

And the video has been taken down, as expected.

As someone who is on the fence on this or at least was. Regardless of who was to blame, if it was warranty, or insurance. Who paid for the recovery..

A prospective owner looks and thinks.
- Will this happen to me as the car is sold as an offroad vehicle, and I use mine as such.
- How can an engine cost SIXTYFIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS?
- How can a brand sell cars in Australia and not have one engine in the country in case of this???

I've owned my current car for coming on 21 years. If I bought a grenadier I'd want at least the same. If the parts cost is so great that an engine is 65k, HTH am I going to afford to maintain it?

I'll admit I saved the video. If I ever find myself thinking of a grenadier ever again I'll watch it again.

Maybe that's why it was taken down, maybe not all the information was true and if so then the company isn't going to want perspective customers watching potential lies. Only guessing, but it was all true, then it wouldn't have been taken down. Only slight errors would have been rectified. Outright lies tend to upset legal people.
If you are worried about the engine costs, ring BMW for more information and costs. If you are worried about water ingress, get a sealed snorkel. As far as I am aware, the BMW unit is a relatively reliable and detuned for additional reliability.

Ineos really need to come out and tell everyone what happened.

The engine would of been quoted as separate parts, machining and labour at retail cost to get to 65k. sometimes quoting insurance jobs this way gives the shop more approved hours and money and allows for other unforeseen issues to be rectified. Not to mention the other collateral damage assuming the engine legged it. There is likely damage to the fuel system, turbo, oil in the coolant, metal in the intake and exhaust, oil and coolant through the DPF and SCR systems. Pulling the old engine and fit a new complete assembly would be half the cost.

Ive heard of 20k for a Toyota D4D and I’ve heard of Land Rover charging 35k for an engine replacement after a catastrophic failure - but this raises the bar to a new level.

It’s inexcusable that they don’t have an engine in Australia. 😬

The repair quote for my hydro-locked Grenadier diesel was very nearly £40k; the short block alone was a £14k list. (Call the total estimate AUD81,000). There is more detail on this thread: https://www.theineosforum.com/threads/drowning-my-grenadier-a-sorry-soggy-saga.12417641/

As for not having an engine in Australia; why would they, it should not be a common failure? That Ineos Automotive were willing to air-freight it suggests that keeping more than a narrow spares pool in Australia is considered uneconomic.

Ineos really need to come out and tell everyone what happened.
Why, is it their fault, we don't know? The video has been pulled and no acknowledgement as to why.
Should Ineos respond to every video complaing about their vehicles, does Land Rover, Toyota or any other manufacturer whether or not it's their fault. As it stands, I would suggest not otherwise the film would still be up. It's probably a deal made between them or it was liebellous. We will never know and it's all speculation.
