BMW Shifter

Never driven a BMW with this electronic shifter. Had a look around on Youtube for some examples on how it functions. One thing that wasn't clear is if you have the car in D or R and open the drivers door while foot off the brake then it automatically goes into P - the chap also mentioned something about seatbelt being fastened or not but didn't really clarify. Guess those that have experience may know what I'm talking about!
It's rare but I sometimes open the door to see what I'm going over or towards - hence the question.
Some good points there and I certainly can‘t answer them. I would like to think that this has been considered and those features designed out.

Like you say sometimes I have opened the door whilst manoeuvring for a better view, would be a nightmare if the vehicle them slammed itself into park. It could be forgiven if the vehicle was equipped with all round cameras and the overhead view on the centre screen but with that being to advanced for this back to basics vehicle then it could be quite prohibitive.

Same thing with the seat belt, especially if it won’t move with it being fastened. I know you can fasten it and then sit on it but that is a work around to a problem that shouldn’t be there..

I hate this Nanny bullshit everywhere.

What if I want to drive backwards precisely over a pit and want to have a look through the open door? No camera can help with that. Another scenario is driving with an open door at low speed to diagnose a noise, say a nail or a bolt sticking in a tire. Or what I do sometimes, looking down through the open door in a car wash for an optimal position of the car etc. etc. ...

There is absolutely no need to step in, in particular not below pedestrian "speeds". 😡

One of the things that drives me nuts on my D4 is that when I open the driver's door with engine running or ignition on there is a constant beeping saying driver's door open and even when I press ok it keeps beeping. Awful design imo. Searched the web for an over ride but not found yet.

My car warns me every time I drive off that the rear seat belts aren't fastened. Apparently it doesn't care about the front passenger seat belt being unfastened. Mercedes told me that the sensor could be detecting the weight of a hat and a jacket I have on the back seat. So I have the choice of putting them in the boot or hitting the Ok button on the steering wheel every time.

Maybe you should wear a baseball cap instead of a bearskin cap.;)

Have you tried wire clippers .

Ha, been close but will probably go into 'limp home mode' or some other meltdown.

If have the same problem in our SLK: A brochure lying on the passenger seat is enough. How stupid is that?

So I always drive with the passeneger seat belts fastened, regardless of whether someone is sitting there or not.

That should work on your back seats as well.

I didn't think of that. Simple fixes are often the best. I hope in the Grenadier I can permanently turn of the stop start thing. I like the fact that when you put it in offroad mode it disconnects all the pings, chimes and warnings

I have to turn mine off every time I get in the car. Sequence, start engine, seat belt tightens and steering wheel comes down and towards me, take hand brake off, put gearbox into sport, turn parking sensor off, turn stop start off, put suspension into dynamic, open sunroof, hit Ok for rear seat belt warning, select which mobile phone is connected, turn music up/down depending on previous drive.

Aah I missed the 'permanently' part. Probably unlikely due to some regulations but perhaps by pushing 'off-road' mode in the roof panel it will kncok out two of the annoying matters of 1) auto s/s & 2) parking sensor. Still an everytime process though granted.

Well the tech is out there...

Is it?

If I drive backwards over a pit, it doesn't help me to "look through the bonnet": I want to look through the back seat.

Or, to keep it simple, out of my open door ... ?
