Bead depth on stock wheels?

I have the factory 17” alloys. I’m going to be doing a two day “short distance traveled” race across Liwa in the UAE next year. That means long distances at low pressures. I’ve run 15 PSI many, many times but probably for not more that 5 hrs and on much smaller dunes.

I could go out and buy some bead lock wheels, but honestly, I’m trying to keep my budget sensible. I’m wondering if the bead depth on the stock tires will allow 10-12 psi for extended periods?

I have a 2 1/2 inch lift on Dobinson springs, and I’m probably gonna go for some 33 inch Yokohama Geolanders.

I would talk to your local trusted tyre shop. They should know, especially understanding the local conditions.

where I am, asking a local shop what they think one should get is a bit like asking a barber if you need a haircut… they just want to sell what they have on hand. There’s also a lot of received wisdom, some of it quite interesting.

That said, they know the game better than I do, for sure, I’m just curious to know what I can get away with before I start spending $$$, and the Grenadier is still an unknown outside this forum!

My local tyre shop just helped me out this week, suggesting I also look at Falken AT4s, as well as the KO3's I already liked. I went the AT4 after more research. AT4's now on order.

AUD100 cheaper a tyre than the long trusted Cooper ST Maxx, which were on special, but still AUD100 more each tyre. I think Coopers is feeling the heat from the KO3s and AT4s.

In Australia Coopers and Mickey Thompson plays games on which tyre dealers can sell then, that did not help Coopers either.

Y'all's tire shops must be amazing. The shops here in USA would be utterly useless for something like this. And legally they couldn't tell you to use any pressure different from factory spec.

Ok I asked ChatGPT and this is what I got… no source mind you so I’m talking with a heavy pinch of salt!

The stock Ineos 17” alloys have:
- Deep bead seats
They’re noticeably deeper than Hilux, LC200/300, or Patrol Y62 rims.

Ineos deliberately spec’d a deep bead because the vehicle was designed for expedition work.

-Aggressive bead humps
These humps (the raised inner ridges) reduce the chance of the bead unseating when aired down.

-A wide bead shelf
Meaning the tyre bead sits further “inboard” before it can pop out.

In practice, the Grenadier OEM 17s grip the bead better than typical Toyota/Nissan OEM rims.
