Underbody Protection from Rival

I had on my list to follow up with Rival about the gas tank skid plate apparently not playing well with the transfer skid plate I had already installed, but they happily beat me to the punch. I just received this welcome e-mail from them, and am very impressed with their proactive customer service and attention to detail:

Our records indicate that you previously purchased our Gen1 Transfer Case Skid Plate for your Ineos Grenadier. Due to updates in the design process, the gas tank skid plate you recently purchased cannot be installed with the Gen1 Transfer Case Skid Plate.

As a courtesy, we will be sending you a Gen2 Transfer Case Skid Plate shortly. This will allow you to replace your current Gen1 Skid Plate and install the new gas tank skid plate together with it.

After doing the Gen1/ install, and thank you for your tips, are the fasteners that were installed with the original installation still used?
That installation was not fun.

Is the same hidden hardware utilized? Dealing with them the first time sucked.

My pleasure, and will let you know after I complete my install if someone does not beat me to it. I've received the new transfer plate and am waiting on my replacement engine skid plate before I crawl back under so I can knock this out all at once, and I expect that will be delivered sometime in February.

I'm about to go through that fun this weekend. I didn't think the transfer skid plate was that challenging to install. I decided i don't want to be laying on the asphalt under the car, i'm renting a bay with a lift to do the work.

Also note.... if you install the front control arm protection plates you have to have the v2 cross member from the engine protection kit or you can't install it.
Remember those standoffs that was part of the kit (looked a it like wide washers), they are not used when you install the control arm protection plates, the control arm plates attaches between the cross bar and the frame. I talked to rival about it and they have the cross member in stock and sending it out to me before the engine skid plate is ready to ship.

when i talked to them they indicated march for the updated engine skid plate. I didn't want to wait that long so i got them to send me the cross bar, that way the engine skid plate should just come straight off and go back on.

of all the parts i've installed from rival, the engine skid plate was the most difficult. The gas tank protection doesn't look that hard but its bulky and some of the bolts are not super easy to get to. I thought the transfer skid plate and the rear control arm skid plates where easy to install as was the diff skid plates. Use some WD-40 in the threaded holes to clean them out before installing. Mine was full of crud, no rubber plugs protecting them except on the diffs.

I screwed up and ordered two sets of control arm skid plates. probably need to put that second set in the classifieds section.

I’d really like to protect the gearbox sump before some Spring trips. Any update on steel skid availability, or should I grab a Rival?

Does the skid plate for the tank replace the original protection or is the Rival plate fitted in addition to the standard part?

Finally got the Gen 1 transfer case plate on. It arrived with broken "fishing leads" on the nuts (if you know, you know) last fall. Rival sent replacements, but (like a couple others have already done) I think nutserts / rivnuts are the only way to go here. 30 second install, no fishing. I can take the plate off and not lose nuts inside the crossmember.

What size/ part # for these nutserts?

I bought the Agile Offroad full kit and will be giving my Rival first Gen armor to my brother.

I will need to fish out some hardware.

M10. I don't have a part number, but most rivnut kits should have an assortment included with the nutset tool.

I've just completed installing Rival's 6-piece underbody protection kit (gen 2 I believe, when looking at photos online) and can confirm that it was far from straight forward and hassle free.

Whilst all the main panels appear strong and of good quality, every single nut that was pre-attached to one of the Rival black-painted supporting brackets required me to use my snap-on thread repair kit to clean the threads in order to allow bolts to fit, and almost all of the 'fishing leads' were also in need of cleansing and/or 'widening' before the bolts that they supplied would pass through without undue force.

Frustratingly, the protection plate that covers the fuel-line (petrol & diesel) & fuel filter (diesel only) that pairs with the transfer case protection panel had pre-drilled holes for 8mm bolts, but it is supplied with M10 bolts, hence I had to get a file out to widen the grooves. Not hard, but also not expected. Also related to this fuel-protection plate, my petrol INEOS has hard-pipe lines running along the chassis rail where the mounting bracket is supposed to fit, so I had to cut out the flange section of the Rival bracket in order to avoid the fuel lines, and the bracket now cantilevers off the main chassis rail. A hard know will cause it to bend upwards as the stabilising fange is now gone, but it will protect the lines from any flung stones / small rocks. I'll send Rival some photos so that they can be aware of this configuration / come up with an alternative bracket design.

Lastly, I suspect that fitting this kit to a new unused vehicle may be easier, but the threaded holes in both front and rear diff's of my 5,500 mile vehicle needed some serious thread clearing with the snap-on kit, despite having had the factory-fitted plastic plus. I think the plugs had actually made it worst as they had trapped loads of rusty gunk, whereas the one hole that was missing a plug was easy to clean out.

Make sure to have a good selection of tools to hand when you prepare to install the kit - nothing worse than repeatedly finding that a different socket size or 1/2 inch extender rod or file etc was needed that was just out of reach or needed fetching from the garage. And give yourself lots of time - in total it took me around 8 hours... not made easier by having to do it on my driveway with the car's front raised on two 2-tonne car ramps, then switched to the rear. And yes, 1 of those hours was spent having to carefully remove a sheared M12 snap-on tap from my front diff... in the half light with a torch in hand as the sun set!

It wasn't mentioned anywhere in Rival's fitment guidance, but I took it upon myself to apply Loctite 243 to all bolts. Rival recommends a 400-mile torque-check post fitting, will I'll reach whilst half way through France on my way to Spain and then Morocco in 2 weeks time - a fun service station pitstop awaits!

Lastly, does anyone know why Rival have stopped making the rear exhaust skid plate? I found it on the USA website copied below, but I can't find it on their website or for sale anywhere in the UK.

The only protection plate that I've been able to find in the UK is this one from N4 Offroad, but it doesn't appear to have two of the mounting bolts (upper centre just below the tow bar). Does anyone have experience of this item?
