Hi All
Wondering if you guys could listen to the attached video and give me your thoughts
there is a quite heavy knock when my car is idling coming from around the starter motor sump area
it is a B 58 petrol apart from the noise which is quite concerning it is running perfectly
Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Is there anything dangling and touching the belts?

That sounds like the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) clacking noise common to the B58 engine and other direct injected engines in general. I will say, compared to other direct injected vehicles I own the B58 fuel system is about the noisiest I’ve encountered and is not very refined sounding at all especially at idle and makes quite the racket.

Doing my last oil change while laying underneath the Grenadier as it warms up to check the oil level and for leaks mine sounds the same. The HPFP is at the top rear of the engine so all the noise it makes is going to be reflected down the firewall to the rear of the engine and make you think you’ve got a problem when you don’t. If anything in the bottom end of the engine was letting go you’d already know about it by this point. But if you are genuinely concerned have the dealer look at it.

Reviving this because I spent a damp few minutes under mine this afternoon doing a quick check of this and that and having read this post earlier thought I would video the same "OMG it's a dodgy bearing / bag of nails" noise my B58 makes.

Google for a video on B58 wastegate rattle and see if that fits your sound.

Have you made any progress with this @Happyoldgit?

Also review this thread to see if it fits your issue. Try to get eyes on the wastegate rod down the right side of the engine. Is it pumping back and forth when that sound can be heard?
The high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) is mechanically driven and can also be a bit clanky when the engine is cold like @C-Mack suggested. It's not Perkins diesel noisy but not quiet either.

Thanks for the heads-up but had a good handle on the source of the noise and just posted the video to confirm to the OP that my HOFP sounds pretty much the same. However, having completed my stable yard and kennel duties this morning I continued to brave the rain and check the wastegate rod and can report that it is not guilty.

I definitely read your post like you were asking for help, but now I see you were just comparing belly sounds with the OPs post back in July.
Odd thread tho. It swaps back and forth between single turbo B58 and twin turbo B57. Quite different setups.
