Software issues

Hi All, most of the ongoing issues I have with the Grenadier seem to be related to software & operating system problems, so I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to consolidate software problems we are having.

Overall the software appears to be badly developed, from the early release issues creating patches and overlays, there are still numerous errors that are causing ongoing operating faults and false warnings. Issues, like the HVAC system, service reset, battery charging ….etc, etc, just haven’t been fixed, probably because they are software related.

To me, the existing system should be treated as the beta test version, scrapped, and a new, completely re-designed and re-written system developed, incorporating additional functionality to make the Grenadier what it should be.

My issues are:

The HVAC system is notorious, it can blow very hot and very cold, so mechanically it does have the ability to work, but getting it to do what we want, when we want is a lost cause. After all the repairs, tinkering, experimentation and blog reading, the best solution I have found is to turn it all off before stopping the car, and then turn it back on after startup, ie a system reset / reboot, which indicates it’s not a mechanical issue, but the software is having problems working out what's happening and gets confused.

The car not remembering basic settings on startup is annoying for everyone.

The service reset is also an ongoing software issue, but I have a new one! I still haven't had it reset after the last service a few months ago, so the car reminds me, every time it's started, how many kilometres and days it’s overdue - BUT - I am now getting this THIRD message - 'Service in 65H' (the car is now confused :ROFLMAO:)?? There must be an instruction or latent code buried somewhere in the software throwing up this message, that is obviously wrong. This should never be there, and an example of just how bad the programming is, it’s embarrassing !

Having to repeatedly cancel non-essential warnings that pop up every time the car is started is annoying and should not happen. Non-essential warnings should either self cancel or only pop up after the car has been idle for several hours (preferably both 😊).

The loud audible warning bong should only be for critical system & operation issues, not things like the service reminder or a couple of PSI change in the tyre pressure.

The tyre pressure warning seems to be too sensitive for a vehicle with large tyres.

I had a trailer light warning for several hours after disconnecting the trailer, the car had been stopped and started several times, but it only cancelled after leaving the car overnight.

Things like the trailer light false warning and tyre pressure warnings taking ages to cancel, and having to leave the car to ‘reset’, indicates that the software doesn’t have real time error correction built into systems. In today’s world, this is pretty much as bad as programming gets.

The battery charging drops off after the battery gets to around 75% to 80%. Up to 75% it charges at or above 40A, then after 75% it drops off to around 3A-5A, so the battery rarely gets over 85% charged.

There is also a huge battery drain, not sure if it’s software or an electrical issue. If it was electrical, it should have been fixed by now, so it’s more likely to be a software problem. I have had a dead car after being parked for less than 3 weeks, so I have no confidence in the electrical system.

Carbon burn-off seems to take about 20 minutes and happens randomly, resulting in the cooling fans screaming when it may not be the best time. It would be good if we can initiate a carbon burn-off when the carbon filter hits say 80%, so we have the option to do the burn-off when convenient, like when we know we will be driving for around 20 minutes.

The fuel gauge doesn’t read accurately, which apparently is due to the unusual shape of the fuel tank. It probably needs two senders in the tank, one to read the level at the top section of the tank, and a second for the bottom section, then a simple algorithm can use both inputs to give a more accurate reading.

There have been reports that the offroad mode doesn’t disable all the vehicle stability systems, which need to be disabled in offroad mode.

I’m not sure why the centre screen comes on, ie the car wakes up, when doors are opened (we don’t need to know how fast the car is going when it’s stationery !!). The car should only wake up when the key is inserted into the ignition. I hate camping remotely and watching the screen light up every time a door is opened, there is already enough anxiety about the battery charge & drain issues as it is !!

Can we also remove the clicking noise when changing volume, I can hear the volume changing.

Finally, the latest software issue is the online manual, in Aussie we can’t use it, so that too is a fail. Testing is supposed to include where the system are going to be used and identify these sorts of issues – before release !!

The manual was also promoted as helping with repairs when remote, but we rarely have internet when remote, so I’m not sure how this is supposed to work??

On the up-side (always good to finish on a positive) there seems to be an overriding command to 'just let the engine run', so if all else fails, at least the car seems to keep running (assuming there is enough battery power to start it !).

I agree there have been, and still are, software issues, but the following points might help ...

All my issues with the HVAC system went away when I did the Coolant Reservoir Purge Procedure.

For emissions purpose, and to maximise battery life, the battery charging profile is set to maintain the battery at 80% most of the time, with occasional charging to 100%. It would be great if we could override this profile if desired (such as when on a camping trip).

It would also be great if we could have an indication of DPF%, and manually initiate a burn.

Vehicle Stability Control is turned off completely when the ESC OFF button is pressed (up to 70km/h), or when rear or front diff locks are engaged).

The clicking noise when changing volume can be turned off by going to Settings -> Acoustic Settings -> Input Sound (set to zero).

When you say that we can't use the online manual in Australia, what exactly do you mean? I have access to, albeit very, very, very slow.

I agree that having a list of all software issues in one place would be helpful.

Many thanks Michael,

good to know a lot of this (wish my agent told me some of this info, but that's what the forum is for).

With the manual, it just sits there with the spinning circle and times out in the background. I have had very few successes, and when I have actually been able to get through, it is incredibly slow.

All the work has been done to the HVAC (several visits to the agent to fix issues), but it still has times when hot air blows out of the rear vents and no response from the dials.

I wouldn't mind the battery charging to 80%, if the discharge rate wasn't so high.
