Ronny Dahl Bought a Quartermaster

Pretty sure in the video Ronny does press the overhead button so the whole system should be turned off, maybe the press wasn’t long enough
How stupid though, press a button for a few seconds, why not just press a button plus the light is already displayed ESC off so why isn’t it off but then no additional dash light comes on when the button is pressed to really turn it off
Another stupid design!!
I would assume Ronny is using the system as it’s designed plus he has a ton of experience off road so knows how to drive.
The only excuse is it’s a very steep sand dune and it’s a heavy vehicle

The longer press is to my mind the vehicle asking you ''do you really want to turn it off?''
Sometimes buttons get pressed in error during the heat of a moment.
I'm happy with how things are. When I got my car, I just printed a small card and laminated it and it sits on the dash next to the A pillar should I need to remind myself of any quirky functions.

You should read this as a measure of how many buttons are getting mashed here in order to avoid getting out into the mud.
That was me with lockers when first got vehicle, had it in my head in had to press, hold for 3 seconds then press to confirm, as with the off-road button. Went to garage saying they won't work, left feeling a right tit🤣

Regarding Ronnie's "Flaw" video, it is indeed a flaw. I loathe that I cannot fully disengage ESC, and still maintain any semblance of speed. When I first got the Gren and went to Ocotillo Wells, Blowsand Hill bested me. Just could not get up that sand hill. Now, with the lift and bigger tires fitted, it may be possible (will know when dessert season arrives), but I'm skeptical. And with the lift, the damned ESC/ABS kicks in on pavement when going too fast around a bend. It's disconcerting to have the ABS kick in in that circumstance, and feels much more unsafe than the extra sway. Hopefully one day, they'll be enough of these things on the road to get some true aftermarket SW adjustment/tuning.

I saw in the video comments, some were advocating for just pulling the ABS fuse. Anyone try this? I'm wary of popping a code that requires a dealer visit.
Didnt he say if you DONT put it into OFFROAD MODE then it will completely turn off? That the OFFROAD button is the one that keeps it from going away 100%? Or did I misunderstand his comment....?

He never mentioned the ESC Off button in the video, and it wasn’t shown activated. Surely he would show it activated given the essential role it plays in shutting the system off?

I think there are a few items that Ronny (who is absolutely a SME) is confusing here:
  • Electronic Stability Control versus Traction Control: ESC can be fully shut off, TC cannot. If he is concerned about TC behaviour on acceleration, then the best (only?) way to overcome that in the Gren is to lock the rear differential.
  • ESC Off telltale on the dash: The ESC Off telltale shows amber when the ESC is in Offroad Mode AND when it is off completely. I presume that this telltale is just warning that stability will be reduced versus onroad ESC.
  • Page 108 of the manual: this shows “(reduced stability)” for the fully off setting (eg locked centre diff or Offroad Mode plus ESC Off button activated). My reading is that the “reduced stability” is intended as a warning to the driver, not a description of the ESC status.
  • Sequence for deactivating ESC: Select Offroad Mode on the overhead console OR move transfer case selector to high or low centre locked, then activate the ESC Off button also on the overhead console OR lock the rear differential (also obviously disables TC).
Total respect for Ronny, met him a few times, I think he’s great. He’s just getting his head around his new vehicle like the rest of us.

I have the inclination that he won't miss the opportunity to film a follow-up video setting things straight. In that line of business, views are views.

SME ?🤔

My “title” at one of my consultant clients is SME and I hate it because it conjures up this image (if you’re a Brit and of a certain age 😂)

Did Red Dwarf make it to Oz or did you see it here? I assumed it was an obscure niche British comedy from the 1990’s and that was the end of it 😂
