Pan American Highway progress updates

It becomes easier as in most situations people one encounter tend to mirror one’s disposition. Stand off with caution and they’ll often do the same.

But unleashing one’s curiosity and charm can give them license to do the same and all sorts of surprising events happen off the back.

Your philosophy background is really showing through. Happy Solstice!:)

Somewhat of a milestone this week as we find ourselves at the end of Argentina Ruta 3, on the island of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost point of South America accessible by vehicle.

We are just over 60,000kms into our pan-American journey, and maybe 50,000kms and ~18 months from the northernmost point attained at Tuktoyaktuk in the Canadian Northwest Territories.

Celebrated our arrival in Ushuaia with an oil change and a field repair of the steering damper (gaffer tape was an anti-cowbell measure).

Found some minor thermal damage on the rear corner of the (new) engine cover and decided it was time for us to part ways.

We are now at 88,000kms. Some weeping showing at the front differential but otherwise driveline/propshaft boots etc appear to be fine.

Bit of a list of components damaged or wearing out (windshield, hood, door seal, mats) but rolled in to town with no error lights or outstanding issues.

Plenty more to come but this felt like a major objective checked off!

Hello! Was in Ushuaia the same time as you and hung around to see if you'd get back to Iggy (coincidentally also the moniker my trialmaster carries), would love to catch up with you guys and catch your thoughts on the trip, were looking to ship ours to Chile and spend a couple of months in Patagonia on the road too.

Excellent, are you still there now?
We’re 24 hours out returning from Antarctica.
Been a bit limited on comms…

Not really a Grenadier or Pan-American Highway update, but recently reached maximal south with a visit to the Antarctic Peninsula.

This represents the north-south/Arctic-Antarctic goal that we set ourselves for this journey.

Somewhat overdue an update here. Just now we’re in the spectacular Argentinian high desert (La Puna), more to come on that later as maybe the more urgent update is a summary of Chile.

First Chile leg was south through the Atacama Desert to Santiago, late last year.

Exited at Paso de los Liberatores, bolting to get the boat for Antarctica, mentioned elsewhere.

Second Chile leg was south to north between late January and mid-March. The route took us through Tierra del Fuego, Torres del Paine, the full length of the Carretera Austral from Villa O’Higgins to Puerto Montt, and out via the Lake District into Argentina.

Got the first puncture across three continents nearby Torres del Paine, pretty incredible performance by the BFGs. Present set are KO3s in 285/75 fitted back in San Antonio. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Busted out the battery booster to get Albert and his Ducati back underway

Only mechanical issue worth flagging occured after extended exposure to heavy rain. In Villa O’Higgins on a ~2C morning Iggy lit up with fault codes and wouldn’t crank. Eventually started after a couple of attempts. Cold start issues persisted for days until at some point we heard the sound of sloshing water. Got underneath the vehicle and released 10-15 litres of water from the passenger side sill.

My working theory is that the water in the sill was shorting the loom. Worth checking your sills after sustained rain… I believe others on the Forum have seen this. I reckon the water is entering via the scuttle, as there’s been a bit accumulating behind the dash on the drivers side as well. Plus side is that it’s easily drained and appears to have returned to normal functioning. On the list for the next service, but less of an issue up here in the desert.
