I need to replace the second car and really don’t know what to get. I need an SUV and am super picky, I really don’t like most of the current SUVs — to me they look like minivans. My car history over the last 15 years or so — LR Disco 1 & 2s — loved them to pieces but ultimately grew tired of it being so needy. Then got an older LR3, not bc I loved it but bc I was hoping it would make me miss my Discos less (didn’t work). LR3 is what I have now and it’s just getting too run down.

I don’t think these have the best history but the only 2 cars that I’m a little drawn to are a Jeep (love boxy-ness) and the Bronco. Yesterday I just came across the Bronco Heritage for the first time and fell in love a little — reminds me of old Intl Scouts or old Broncos. So retro.

I haven’t driven either btw. But before I drive anything I wanted to ask if anyone had any opinions about the above cars or had other ideas. I don’t want a new car. I don’t want to spend a ton of money bc would rather put $ into the Grenadier. Thinking a model 2020 up to now, with lower mileage. I’ve seen those “buy back” cars at times for decent prices but realllly unsure if that’s a great idea. Any thoughts…?

A 2 door red bronco heritage manual would be my choice for a fun runnabout. i think that config is done tho, so it'd be used.
I did see some manual options but argh, for big city driving I think it might start to bug me after a while..? My first car was manual and it was fun then though!

I just did the autotrader scan and there are autos, but no manuals. ans unusual configuration i guess. For me it depends on the manual. The shame of the death of the manual, is, stiff and notchy ones are thing of the past, and generally easy to dd even in a spaghetti bowl like pittsburgh.

Bronc Heritage manual

I found this one yesterday that I thought was manual but maybe I’m reading it wrong..?

Broncos and Jeeps are so close to the Grenadier in terms of driving dynamics, road noise, and appearance that I don't really see the point of getting one of those when you can just drive the Grenadier. If you want something for around town and good for city driving, then you want something dependable with good road manners (comparatively). I'd point you towards a Toyota 4 Runner or even Rivian's SUV.

This might not totally fit your bill, but Used Rivians are out there. Yes it's electric, I know. But they are absolutely amazing vehicles for around town and often even for road trips. If you have a space to install an inexpensive level 2 charger at home the cost of operating and the almost total lack of required maintenance is amazing. It will leave you time to enjoy and maintain your Grenadier and not worry about your daily vehicle.

I have bought two Rivian R1's to date for my wife and it's really hard for me to not go get one for myself.

I would suggest looking at Toyota 4Runner and the Sequoia. Not sure how big of an SUV you are looking for though. I like the older 4Runners with the V6. Solid builds.
The Toyota Highlander is a nice rig too.

Why can't you use the Grenadier every day?
Grenadier is my main vehicle for long trips but have a little car for local 1-2 mile trips (Abarth 595c), I'm really racking the miles up on it🤣
I can see the point of second vehicle but not buying a different version of the same thing.

Boy, you and I are on completely different planets!!! 😂

But in all seriousness I do agree with you in this instance. I just otherwise have a vehicle hoarding issue.

I'm with CRH. The Grenadier is my daily driver. And absolute peach for the island - and I tend to use it to go on holiday as well. Happy on long motorway drives (although I still hate long motorway drives!) as it is OK comfort wise - just the mpg is a little painful. Just back from Wales (10hrs on main roads and motorways) and the Grenadier was faultless. Anywhere we go from here starts with 100+ miles through the mountains... is there a better way to travel :)

I have a second car, as you may have guessed an XC90. Had it from new, 2018, fully loaded as I got carried away with the whole first ever new car experience. Now, it's my 'spare'. Thought about selling it, but Mrs C has osteoporosis and I foresee the day that she won't want/be able to climb into a Grenadier; at that point the Volvo comes back into focus. Could never afford to replace it. Us poor pensioners have to plan ahead :devilish:

'Car hoarding' is probably more west side of the Atlantic that east side. We have collectors 😂

We daily the Grenadier and a Macan S and are very happy with the combo... we have a number of other cars but if we wanted to add something to the mix it would be either GTI previous generation with buttons, plaid interior and a manual transmission or and older Mercedes E-Class. I bought my mother a Crosstrek (she's on her third one now) and for a daily beater that just works it's hard to beat for the money albeit not that much fun.

Kept trying to talk myself into a Bronco but the cabin noise and build quality held me back, the new Land Cruiser FJ that's supposed to come out next year maybe interesting. Too bad no Jimny here in the States although I do like not dying so maybe that's a good thing.

I kid you not, it was one of my favorite Volvo V 90, get a pre 2021. They are about 25k now and big but sporty.

I try not to church it up that much. I'd prefer being called a collector, but my collection, though all in excellent condition, typically doesn't draw the same kind of admiration as most collections. I have a ton of Unimog's, Military Hummers, Volvo C303, Gwagon and most recently an LMTV M1078A1. Not exactly a collection most people want to go view 😂

What makes it even more odd is I live in a big city. Takes an hour just to get out far enough to make use of any of them 😢

The new FJ is supposed to be Asian markets only. They confirmed it is not coming to the US.
