Looking for REAL OBD2 / CAN Bus Experts

As someone who is not in the motor trade or electrical efficient, when the errors/warning lights appear on cars it generally seems to be just 'an error' or a fault with the sensors. If a fault appeared and you then cleared it and it does not then come back on, does this mean it is just a glitch or have you covered up an actual fault?
My assumption is that the fault would pop back up if there was a real problem or the sensor itself was faulty and therefore we are safe to just reset to our hearts content.
In my 1981 Porsche 928 there is a relatively extensive electrical system, relays for ever function....The central computer tells you e.g. a brake light blows, the actual specific message flashes up and there is a central warning light. . There is a red light you reset for non critical faults. If you ignore the flashing red light, well it can end badly. E.g. low oil, no brake fluid etc
This is 1981. Awesome car btw.
And here we are , 45 years later!

My experience was with the wife's Cayman, red engine warning light a few times when it was new, always a faulty sensor that needed changing, never an actual problem. Had to be taken by flatbed to Porsche numerous times as the AA couldn't be sure of the issue.

<This century> cars are shockers, Porsche are as bad as any other maker.

Pretty much the case.
For example I had an egr push rod crack which threw an amber engine light. I cleared it and it came back when I next restarted the engine.
Some others clear themselves such as a wiper error if the wipers are stuck to the screen.

I often have PDC sensor errors that just clear themselves within a couple of minutes

The Globeguard caught my eye in this thread as an off the shelf product. Below is an email from the company for those interested. It seems that this is much more of a diagnostic tool than some of the devices currently available that do no more than read limited OBD information. The Globeguard seems to be truely bi-directional with actuator control (as JoeJet posted) e.g. fuel and abs pumps and is much closer to the Ineos factory diagnostic tool. See below response.

Many thanks for your interest in purchasing GlobeGuard products!

Our team is working towards including the service reset in the upcoming INEOS update. We aim to make this available as a complimentary online update for all our customers. We expect to be able to offer the Service Reset in 2–4 weeks and will certainly keep you updated on our progress and the final scope of features.

We offer our GlobeGuard Basic ONE - INEOS, which is fully compatible with the INEOS Grenadier. Our goal is to get as close as possible to the original diagnostic tool.
The diagnostic software is included in the price and is available as a free smartphone app on the Android and iOS app stores. You can download the Windows app for free from our homepage.

The INEOS software update is free of charge for the first year from the date of purchase.
Your GlobeGuard with, for example, the INEOS software license is valid for life, regardless of whether you purchase a software update or not.

We cover all 19 INEOS electronic systems and you can for example clear airbag system errors (reset the Airbag DTC code) as well as errors of the remaining 18 ECU's and many further workshop functions.

One of GlobeGuard's unique selling points is its ‘remote diagnosis’ feature. I am sure that this is a particularly valuable feature in Japan. Find out more in the attached flyer ‘GLOBEGUARD_Flyer_3-fach_GlobeGuard-Portfolio_mFaltMarken_V107-EN.pdf’, on our homepage and the about 85 vehicle brands we cover in attached document "Supported vehicle brands_2025_III_EN.pdf"!

Please note that we offer two GlobeGuard product variants. Here is the difference between Basic and Pro devices:
GlobeGuard Basic - 650.00 CHF
-> ONLY for 1 brand (e.g. INEOS)
-> Cannot be extended to other vehicle brands; ONLY a change to another brand is possible (e.g. INEOS to Land Rover).

GlobeGuard Pro - 850.00 CHF (1 brand included)
-> For 1 to n-vehicle brands (e.g. INEOS, Land Rover, FORD, BMW/Mini, ...)
-> Can be expanded to include any number of additional vehicle brands - various attractive license packages are available.

You can order directly on our web shop or by email and pay by bank transfer or credit card payment link. We would then need your full billing and delivery address, email address, telephone number, and, if applicable, your VAT ID number in advance. Delivery will be made after receipt of payment.
The DHL Express shipping costs to Australia are about 104.00 CHF, depending on the legal provisions, additional fees such as import duties may apply.
First, I would wait until they really included those features and someone has really verified this works!
From my experience and research so far, this is extremely hard to achieve - even with help of BOSCH and INEOS this will take a lot of effort - I believe it when I see it working, not a single day before!

But I totally understand the salesman behind this email "buy it now for full price, you can update later for free"... :ROFLMAO:

I am using the Vlinker BM+ : https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0BLHCYD8T?tag=globalgrena0b-20
BM+ stands obviously for the BMW types of engines/ECUs.
The app I use is Car Scanner Pro. See below some screenshots from my iPad. I have access to most sensors and clear faults but of course no access to the protected ones.

I have some logs from CAN/BUS exploration of the dongle if you want.

"I have access to most sensors and clear faults" - did you really verified the clear of fault codes?
I also have an app with the OBDlink MX+ device, it says it clears the fault codes - but I tested and checked was the devices was talking to the ECUs, nothing was cleared at all, no correct ECU was addressed, but in the app all looked pretty well.
From this experience, I don't believe it until I was able to test and possitively verified it. Just saying... ;)

I did check because these faults were showing on the Grenadier dashboard through the orange « engine issue » light. The light went off after clearing through the app. That said I did not provoke any fault just to check whether the app/dongle was working :)
On the sensors, since I do not have a master list of what is available it is hard to compare, maybe the mapping is an happy coincidence. For example I can’t read the engine oil temp which is odd (and I’m missing this one badly, although it is visible from the Temp screen in the car). Like I said, if you’re interested I can run a scan and send you the logs.

Can you please send me the exact link to the iPad App you're using. It's still confusing as there are so many similar named apps available. Or a screen shot of the apps version and details.
I'd like to give it a try on my iPad, then I can parallel use this app and sniff the CANBus traffic.

OK, thanks! That helps.

Tomorrow, I'll receive the "vLinker BM+" and the "vLinker MC+" OBD2 dongles. These devices are not too expensive (36 and 50 Euros). Will try it with the same app as you and then I can verify the CANBUS traffic... 🤪
And this app seems to work with my "OBDLink MX+" too!
I admit I did not play a lot with it, especially with the connection profile. Maybe there are better ways to use it but I like the extra set of gauges and the ability to get info on what is going on with the engine. Since it is a BMW oriented dongle I suspect it won’t recognize non-engine related ECUs. Looking forward to reading the results of your experimentations.

I've done a short test today with Car Sacnner Pro, all my three OBD2 dongles working well. But Car Scanner Pro, as expected, just scans the generic OBD2 ECU. This is the one for the emission tests at TUEV. These are standard and usable in all modern vehicles. So no access to any specific ECU's in the Grenadier. All the sensors are pure standard, not a single specific one for the Grenadier. But at least I can use this app to get some more testing data and access to standard sensors.
The most positiv point here is, the dongles from vLinker (BM+, MC+) are working pretty well and are way cheaper than the OBDLink MX+! So I will use the vLinker MC+ now for my app development.
