Gear ratio change

Transfer case 4-0 gears. The road going manners are fine, this isn’t a high volume wheeler so 37’s and up aren’t a buyer issue. Lower Diff gears that have a significant low range impact will just slop up what’s fine as is on road.

The transmission permits a full range of gears in the auto, so a lower 3-4 t case ratio would permit more crawl control without much penalty, in low.

I would agree. Some sort of selectable under drive would be best but that's a bigger job. Ashcroft crawler box is one of the most coveted Rover parts. I loved the crawler on my D90.

I use a marlin crawler 4.7 toybox in the 60. I think they quit making those. I wonder how the computers in this would even deal with something like that. Would it know? Would it toss a hissy fit?

If you are who I think you are, aren't you working on a 4:1 ratio?
 
Can you do a 4.70? I know that ratio is available in a Dana 44 which has about the same ring gear size. That would be about the perfect jump from the stock 4.10 when we are running a common “35 inch” tire. I don’t see many people wanting to stuff 37” tires on a grenadier. Besides a 37” tire would take some modifications where a 35 fits stock.

Not sure what it would do in low range, we know it throws a hissy fit in high range with gear modifications.

AI did the math and came back with 4.69 as being the same as 4.10 on factory tires. I know my Bronco Sasquatch on 35’s came with 4.70 and the next model down was on 4.56… not that this is the same as a Bronco.

I’m guessing you did the math already. Simply put I would like to have the same effective gearing as factory when running 255/85r17 (35”) tires.

Always difficult to match an exact tire brand size, some 35" are not really 35", same with 285/75-17 (34"), etc..

Meh, the stock gearing does well enough for 99% of Gren owners. It will be awhile before enough people are beating these enough to warrant new ratios. Dirt roads don't require a re-gear at 35".

Now once these have depreciated a bit more then you might be looking at something. But to be honest if I wanted to seriously wheel my Gren I would swap the axles full stop. Possibly portals or maybe just 60's. Portals and 37's make the most sense to me. But 60's and some 40's would be kinda cool.

Well, I'm the wrong person to ask since I own more than 10 vehicles from a Rivian all the way to a dedicated crawler. As well I would likely build my own axle if I changed over.

That said, let's take D90's again. I performed custom axle swaps on several NAS Defenders starting in about the year 2003. So it took about 7 years before axle swaps became a thing for US based customers. These were boutique axles though not Junkyard swaps. The thing that sparked swaps on 90's was that we were starting to easily exceed the limits of the Rover axle. First I started making custom half shafts, then moved to 31spline shafts with HD 110 CV's. Then we had to move up to 1.5" 35spline shafts to keep things intact. So I would think until you see people regularly breaking shafts or DC joints it will be a tough sell. But the geometry issues of both axles is a huge issue. If those were corrected I am sure you could get almost immediate traction with customers wanting their $90k truck to drive right. But these things should be solvable without an axle swap, I personally just haven't had time to tear my front end down to get measurements.

Anyways, lots of options out there. It will all come around eventually unless Ineos tanks tomorrow. Then they are all just too valuable to tear up.
