Vehicle stuck in neutral, then it stuck in park. Would not engage the transmission. Error messages came on stating gear box error. Had to rock the vehicle back and further multiple times (like 10 times). Eventually, the gear box shifted into park and made a pretty loud noise when engaged. The vehicle then was able to go into drive and has functioned fine for the past 10 miles. Bizarre. Need to understand what happened. All warning lights have gone off.

Was the transfercase lever out of position at all? Check any electrical connections to the transmission. That's all I can think of.

Edit: If a door is open the vehicle will jump into park if you try to drive unless (I think) you've engaged Offroad mode.

This. Door perhaps not shut, or at least not registering as closed. Some cars get screwy if the battery is on its way out as well.

Thanks guys. Doors were closed. I was in 4X High. Was very odd - just grateful it went back into gear. We were very remote and would have been an all day affair to get it back to the road. Check engine light remains on now…good thing I have a service scheduled.
